Can award travel be booked using 2 *A carriers on 1 ticket?

I am trying to book a C award ticket from HKG-NRT-HNL on UA. Didn't realized that UA no longer flies from HKG-NRT and is now a code share on ANA. Called the reservation center and they claim that since the HKG-NRT leg is on ANA they cannot issue an award ticket. They can only do the NRT-HNL part which is on UA.

I am not looking for a saver award, I was willing to pay the miles for the standard award but they still say they cannot do it although UAL.com was more than happy to sell me the ticket for cash.

Is this really true? Are we not allowed to mix different *A carriers on 1 award ticket or are they just trying to give me a hard time?

Standard awards are only available on United-operated flights -- "Star Alliance awards" are all available only at the saver level.

You'll need a Star Alliance saver award for that. NH availability is often good--are your dates at all flexible?

I just finished a saver award ticket on UA-LH-US that was booked online.

Mixing *A carriers on a reward ticket is permitted. The reward seats just need to be available.

After another 15 minutes on the phone with the 1K line (my secretary spent 30 minutes with reservations earlier today), I got the following from UA:

1) There are seats on ANA from HKG - NRT in C on savers award.

2) There are no seats on UA from NRT - HNL in C on savers award but of course plenty on standard award.

3) You cannot book a standard award HKG-NRT-HNL when part of the trip is on a *A flight even if there are space available as saver awards.

4) What they can do for me is: Book a HKG-NRT roundtrip in saver C, and then nest in a NRT - HNL standard C in between. The cost, only 60K for HKG-NRT + 150K for NRT-HNL (Total 210K) instead of the 130K for the standard C HKG-HNL.

I wonder how much worse you can screw your customer?

Three things to try:

1) See if F awards are available
2) See if NH has space on its NRT-HNL flight
3) Check out the revenue fare from TPE instead. I think the Z fare is about $1400
