Any time the first officer left the cockpit, he for some reason switched Ch9 to music. It would stay music until the FO needed to make an announcement over the PA--after which it went back to Ch9. (This only happened with the first officer as far as I could tell.) So we had Ch9 about 1/2 - 2/3 the flight, punctuated by lengthy periods of jazz.

4/9 UA146 A319 MSP-ORD Asked the purser, who asked the Captain. He said that he did it by request only, and it would be turned on after we hit 35,000ft.. 35K came and went, and Channel 9 was never turned on

4/9 UA 346 LAS-DEN ^ w/ announcement
Captain Ed Contreras on UA 346 was one of the best Channel 9 experiences in a long time. He hosted a ~ 30 minute "talk show" (as he called it) discussing the aviation in general and the B752.

4/8 SFO-LAX UA305 A319
4/10 LAX-SFO UA841 B757 (plus a horrible JFK based crew that was "primarily there for my safety" - and no, that wasn't why they were horrible)
Was glad that I still had the video about changes I'd like to keep me warm without my Ch. 9.

4/1 UA 547 LAS-ORD ^ (But barely audible most of flight - very "screechy")
4/11 UA 547 ORD-LAS (Politely asked the flight attendant if she could request channel 9 be turned on and she returned a few minutes later and said the response from the cockpit was "We're not channel 9 type of pilots"
