SFO-FRA 1/3

Tried to upgrade my friend (GM) Y->C on a V fare. He was #3 when we left the RCC to head to the gate.

arrggh! corporate travel agent booked me on a discounted, non-upgradeable business class ticket rt from SFO-PEK. boss traveling with me wasn't too happy either when our swu's weren't eligible. lesson learned.

You can always upgrade with miles+copay from Z class. Probably worth it if the flight is on a 777 with old C.

Ua 932 iad-fra

Failed to clear Y-C on UA 932 IAD-FRA Saturday January 8, 2011. 1K on a B fare. C was oversold, entire flight went out full.

I was #1 on the waitlist (3rd time this has happened on past 8 segments since December 1).

Equipment was N222UA, old configuration in new paint.

This is why I fly IAD-BRU-FRA or IAD-AMS-FRA. BRU and AMS are rarely oversold.

It seems as if IAD-AMS is the easiest Upgrade to Europe. Lots of NC months out!

Another flight that seems to have lots of Upgrade Space is the United Flight 944 from Chicago (ORD) to Frankfurt (FRA). I've found these Routes to have most Upgrade and Award availibility.

In August of 2009 I managed an op-up Y-C on the exact same flight on a Saturday evening. At the time I was only 1P. Go figure how much times have changed in less than 18 months, now I can't upgrade as a 1K on any fare.

With the two SWU failures on Jan 8th & 9th, I potentially can see what happened. Many people took Jan 3-7 off also, so their main return to work day was today, Jan 10th. Thus, Jan 8th & 9th may have been an anomaly, with heavier than usual traffic because that was the end of vacation for many people.

It's the only airport I fly through to in Europe where I awalys pray for an IRROP! or 24 Hour delay.
