Help with award routing

Flying from Phoenix to Bangkok with a stopover in Manilla on the way there.
Routing looks like this:

PHX-LAX-BKK-MNL

MNL-BKK (stopover)-LAX-PHX

All in business class with Thai on the long haul flights.

CS agent says its a valid routing and when he goes to book comes back and says it's not a valid routing. Any ideas?

stopover needs to be en route to your final destination so BKK has to be the stopover point on your way to MNL.

Transit then also stopover = NO

You are first transiting BKK and then after your stopover in MNL you are going back to BKK.

Why not try instead, if possible, via NRT:
PHX-LAX-NRT-MNL(stopover)-BKK(destination)-LAX-PHX

You're not flying PHX-BKK with a stopover in MNL.

You're flying PHX-MNL with a stopover in BKK on the return.

(Otherwise it WOULD be impermissable.. you'd be conecting in BKK on your way to your destination of BKK, which would not be allowed. Describe it as PHX-MNL and BKK stopover on the return and you're fine.)

And the routing is perfectly legal.

Enroute stopover on the return. MPM for PHX-MNL via the Pacific is 10,281 and PHX-LAX-BKK-MNL clocks in at 10,001. So you're good there.

I see nothing wrong with this routing. Hang up call back.

I don't think they will allow you to do a stopover on the return, or at least their rules say they don't for reasons I don't quite understand. Per the UA site:

One stopover en route to your final destination or one open jaw is permitted for a flight award on United between the continental U.S. and Hawaii or between the U.S. and the Caribbean, Asia, Australia, Central America, South America, Middle East or Europe.
