It's news to me. My 1k expires 12/31? Benefits thru 31 January

I had a question about the fly 10,000 miles in a quarter and receive 2 CR1's benefit, so I called UA.

My 1k expires end of January, or so I thought. UA told me my 1k status ends December 31, but they leave it open through end of January just in case any other miles are late entering my account. She told me that I still can use 1k benefits until January 31.

Since I'm no longer 1k in January, the 2 CR1's for flying 10,000 miles in January will not be credited to my account. This makes sense only if UA is correct.

Is United correct, or should I have hung up and called back?

I think similar situations have been discussed before regarding earning CR1s. IIRC, one must still be 1K whenever the sweeps for CR1s occur, hence, unless the sweep occurs before 1/31, the CR1s will not arrive even if you have flown 10K BIS in the month of January.

PS: I think the agent was wrong. Your 1K status expires 1/31/11. Just look at your card!

The agent was not techically correct but just trying to explain that you don't get your CR1's in 2011 unless you requal.

The status lasts until 1/31, right? I'm not re-qual'ing 1P, but I have a bunch of January travel. Hoping UA still looks upon me as a 1P for those flights...

The agent must have been confused with attaining 1k ends Dec.31.
1k benefit (regardless if you attain 1k for next year) is still Jan.31

My spouse had exactly this same situation a few years ago (actually when 1K benefits extended until the end of February). Flew >10K in January and didn't get the CR1s. Called to "fix" and was told that she wasn't 1K anymore, even though it clearly stated that she was on the card and the T&Cs. After much discussion, we got nowhere. Very frustrating.

It was a long time ago, but I did get the CR1s in the same situation.

In the past if you were 1K on the date of the sweep for CR1s you would get them. When status expired Feb 28, you could get the CR1s if you had flown 10,000 early enough to be picked up by the second Saturday of February sweep. Now that status expires Jan 31, I am not sure it is possible to earn CR1s in this situation. In the past I do not think they have run any sweeps in January for January activity (the first sweep was the February sweep).

Will the extension of one SWU UA has historically offered to 1Ks be available in January to 2010 1Ks who do not achieve 1K status in 2011?

Extensions are traditionally only available to people who renew status.

If I recall correctly, United's "quarters" for CR-1's are offset by one month...

In the old days, the January sweep was for Q4 of the previous year.

That is because in order to qualify for CR-1's in January, you'd need to have flown 10,000 BIS by the first Saturday of the month to earn the e500's, then that would trigger the CR-1's during the second-Saturday sweep.

Since the first Saturday is 1/1/11, it would be impossible to get Q1 2011 CR-1's under the way the system had been set up...

The sweep date is the second Saturday of the month (not the first) and there has not been a sweep in January in recent history.

That was in the days when e500s triggered CR1s -- no longer true. So the past experience may not be relavent since UA is handling the process differently.

Status dates with regards to the Chase Visa

Since I will most likely not be reaching 1K this year, I am curious if I qualify for the annual card fee waiver in my situation.

Card renews Jan 2011, charged 140 on Jan 1 (historically)

1K expires Jan 31.

As I would still be 1K during the renewal can I ask for the fee to be waived?

I did a status match to CO in the 2nd half of 2009, before they joined *A, I didn't end up using it as much as I expected, only 2 flights, but I did notice it expires end of Feb 2011, 1 month after I will loose my 1K status, so I guess I will get some benefit from it after all.
