Purchasing upgrade for someone else's ticket

I want to give my daughter an upgrade from coach to business. Can she give United my number and get her upgrade when she buys her ticket? Can I get her an upgrade after has already bought the ticket?

Thanks

Mickeyten

How do you plan to support the upgrade?

As an upgrade sponsor you have to initiate the activity after the ticket is purchased.

How do I sponsor an upgrade on United?
With united.com’s sponsor an upgrade feature, you may sponsor someone else for an upgrade on a United flight without having to go to the airport. Simply have the last name of the person you want to sponsor (the last name does not have to match yours) and his or her United Airlines confirmation number. Select the Sponsor upgrades link, and enter the pertinent information.

You can also call United Reservations at 1-800-UNITED-1 (864-8331).

Welcome to FT, Mickeyten!

Once she buys the ticket, you can go online and sponsor the upgrade. The information you need is her confirmation number and last name. Note that if you're using miles, there will be a copay involved if you have no status.

Just of our curoisity, my father is a 1k, and I have looked at the sponser the upgrade and it says there would be a 50 dollar copay for him to use miles. Is it normal to charge the Co-Pay for 1Ks sponsering upgrades? Or does it just have to do with sponsering a general member?

1Ks pay upgrade international copays
All elites are exempt from the $50 domestic copay

flying within the continental U.S., Alaska and Canada.

However, general members and non-members who are sponsored by an elite member who is not traveling on the same reservation will still pay the co-pay.

United fairly recently (in the last month or two) removed the copay for elites on most domestic flights, but that doesn't apply to sponsoring an upgrade for a non-elite on a separate PNR.
