Keep the grapefruit SEPARATE!

Has anybody noticed, in the UA dishes of fruit, that often times they peel grapefruits and allow the very sour juice to spread to the accompanying honeydew, grapes, etc?

Grapefruit has a very distinct and acquired taste. Unfortunately, too weird for my likings, and when it spreads, I choose not to eat the other fruits. (Which I think is a great food to eat in flight as it contains lots of water.) Serving the grapefruit is fine; just wish they could control how it lands on everything else. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

It's amazing that catering doesn't notice these things. Orange juice is sometimes poured over other freshly-cut fruit so that the citric acid stops the it oxidising and turning brown. Perhaps they thought that substituting it with grapefruit juice was a good idea and didn't think of the consequences of the strong bitterness.

On recent flights the melon was too hard to eat, so don't mind.

Anyone else finding too many seeds in the Chinese salad?

This is a funny post. Last night I'm flying Chicago to Newark and get the chicken salad and the fruit dish. The fruit all had the grapefruit taste, which I don't mind at all, but there wasn't any grapefruit in the dish. I'm thinking they marinate it in Grapefruit juice or something to keep it looking fresh.

My cantelope and honey dews were wonderful though, soft and full of flavor.

I did go looking for that grapefruit though.

Grapefruit, I'm fine with it... although when I expect to taste cantelope and get grapefruit taste instead, it is weird.

My thing is peppers. Capsicums. Green peppers, red peppers, yellow peppers... I'm allergic, and they put them on and in *everything.* Ugh!!! Even the smell makes me gag. On SQ, you can order a special meal made without them, but not on UA.

Just another note of caution....if a person is taking prescription medication for cholesterol (myself included), they (we) are strictly told to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice. I am not positive off the top of my head, but I think it is either because the grapefruit juice counteracts the "statins" or causes a problem with the liver (which they constantly monitor while on these types of drugs).

So, everyone on these drugs, beware!!!

See ya in the skies!!!

Ironically, my allergy is citrus fruits - oranges, grapefruit, lemon, lime, etc. When folks like UA do things like that described above (non-disclosed marinade), I'm in a world of hurt. I usually go the "better safe than sorry route" if I at all suspect the addition of citrus to a dish but it can be very frustrating when the fruit looks yummy and I'm hungry!

When it comes to possible allergies and prepared food, "caveat emptor." Sometimes one has to give in, though.

For example, if one were allergic to dairy and there happened to be one slice of Dulce de Leche cheescake in the refrigerator. Is it worth the pain/misery/discomfort for a few moments of culinary bliss? As a matter of fact, yes, it was http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I also have allergy issues when flying:

I'm allergic to sitting in coach and paying $10 for a meal. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tongue.gif
