On a route like ORD-SFO, as 1P, I prefer the old config. I know it's not as comfortable as the IPTE seats, but having 20+ more biz seats, and 50 less seats in United Economy makes an upgrade for me actually a possibility. Last time I flew 973 the upgrade list was absolutely crazy, and I'm pretty sure not a single 1P cleared.

"hot spare" - that's a term for a spare aircraft ready to be used.
"going tech" means an aircraft breaking down due to technical problems. So if we used N194UA as a hot spare because N107UA went tech, it means N194UA, ready to go, was swapped in because N107UA broke down.

I was at SFO last night when 973 arrived at Gate 84. That is one tired-looking bird!

You can now track the movements of United aircraft by tail number on FlightAware: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N194UA

The old bird

I was on 973 last night and my video was inop. Although "tired", it was nice not having to do the first class harness!

I am on SFO-ORD tomorrow (22nd) and it won't let me do on-line check-in. Wonder if there is a problem.

According to flightaware, N194UA did not go back to SFO today, rather N127UA picked up the trip.

As strange as this may sound (including to me), right now I'm slated to be on that old 747 on an ORD-SFO hop next week, and am feeling kind of nostalgic and looking forward to it. Will be in my favorite seat on the old C 747, 15H upstairs. All things considered, I'd rather be in new C, but this should bring back some memories.

Of course, if they swap to a new C and I lose my upgraded seat, I'll be singing a very different tune.

Yeah I think its great that they fly the 747 domestically. When I took it in May, there wasn't an open seat anywhere in the house.

Does anyone know if United has a history of flying this big jet on the ORD-SFO run? Does it ever fly the reverse route?

Online check-in has finally opened up for me and it's a new C 747 making the run to Chicago.^
