Ever since I saw the 1980 movie "Airplane", I rarely order fish on a plane anymore.

Ok, sorry I didn't catch that quote from "Airplane" earlier. Great quote!

Most United wines are only appropriate as mouthwash.

True in Y, not so in C.

That's why the OP should have picked the lasagna.

Yesterday, DEN-HNL, in F. A very uninspired (DEN-based) crew, but nothing terrible.

The FA comes through the cabin taking lunch orders with: "Chicken or Fish?" Nothing more.

The guy in front of me asks--"What's the difference?" The FA says: "The chicken comes with potatoes, the fish with rice."

I then ask: "How are they prepared?" The FA says: "The chicken is macadamia crusted, the fish (I think he said mahi) comes with a hoisin sauce."

Is it really too much to expect the person taking orders in F to say something like: "We have a macadamia-crusted chicken breast, or mahi mahi with hoisin sauce?" as opposed to: "Chicken or fish?"

[I had the chicken. It was actually quite good. :)]

That is alot more than I got on a recent LAX-ORD flt. FA came by and said "Wanna an omelet"? Nothing more nothing less.

reminds me of an old joke:-

Waiter - 'specials tonight are venison and chicken'.
Customer - 'what's the difference?'
Waiter - 'well, one's deer, and one's cheep'

You and I must have very different tastes. The C wines are every bit as bad as the Y wines. But when UA is only paying $4/bottle, what can you expect?

I had a similar experience recently, but being lactose-intolerant, they are not going to get an answer that easily out of me. I need to know whether something is doused in cream or cheese, otherwise I'm in for some gastro-hell. And in case anyone is wondering, there is no non-dairy special meal. Even Asian vegetarian ("limited use of dairy products" - yeah right) doesn't cut it most of the time, and vegan meals are full of beans. As long as they explain what's in the dishes, I can always find something workable.

It's also just so much classier to be asked "Mrs. GLR, today for lunch we have.... what is your first choice?" (and I don't mind being asked for my first choice because I always seem to get it).

My favorite was a couple of years ago: FA approaches me in F with "You gonna eat?"

:D

On the flip side of that, I enjoyed the, ah, elegant F experience provided by the FA on a CRJ awhile back. Rather than simply asking if we wanted a snack box, he asked with a straight face, "Are you dining with us today?" :)

Nah. It's true in C and even int'l F, for that matter, with very very few exceptions. Even in int'l F it's pretty lucky to see a bottle that exceeds around $10 retail or so, but that's not the problem - the problem is that even for $10 bottles they are lousy selections.

Maybe a long time ago. I flew to HNL in F a few times last year and never had menus.

True, the wines served in C are also usable as a substitute for anti-freeze.

malsf1 Jun 10, 2010 9:50 am

On a trip a few weeks ago, I was amused when asked "rubber chicken or fish bones"? I have spoken with this FA a few times before, so we both laughed.

Maybe they should put up a "Today's Specials" chalkboard on a bulkhead.
