UA935, London to L.A., hits severe turbulence, emergency landing in Montreal

Just heard on a cable news channel that UA935 diverted to Montreal with some serious injuries, including one person with an open fracture.

No news links to this, other than a Google search uncovering an airliners.net thread reporting it as well.

UAL.com confirms the diversion of the flight to Montreal.

Edited to add CBC News link to story.

Apparently, this is the new config 777 and at least one FTer is on it. I hope all onboard are ok and those injured are able to recover.

Does the use of a rescue plane mean the original was damaged? Wouldn't they just refuel and continue on their way if the bird was OK?

A sobering reminder to stay buckled in, possessions stowed, etc., especially given I'm traveling that direction tomorrow myself.

OK, this may sound naive - but I've never experienced "severe" turbulence.

I'm interested in hearing what it's like. Does it feel like the plane is about to fly apart?

Taking 935 soon, although it sounds like it may be a different bird as this one seems in bad shape.
Best wishes to all concerned.

I've flown through a thunderstorm in a relatively small plane (ATR-72)... severe turbulence for a while, maybe 15 minutes...

What's strange is I never really had a panic instinct. Never seemed like there was any real danger or that the plane was "falling apart".

It was mostly a lot of being violently jerked side to side or floating weightless for a few seconds followed by slamming back down. But nothing that sounded like pieces of the plane were stressed. Really most of the noise was everything in the galley slamming around and an occasional startled yelp from a passenger. And the sound of the engines a few times at full throttle trying to gain back some altitude.

Everyone was firmly buckled in, otherwise there easily could have been many broken bones. Now I am adamant about keeping the seat belt on all the time. I would have had a concussion without it.

Can you elaborate on what "seems in bad shape" means?

Hoping to hear from mtimmer who was supposed to be on this plane.

The fact that UA is sending another plane to pick up stranded pax may suggest the original 777 is not safe to fly at this moment. At least it needs to be thoroughly inspected before it returns to regular rotation.

Glad that everyone is alive, wish those injured a speedy recovery.

Hope our fellow Flyertalkers are uninjured.

The definition is as follows:

Severe Turbulence causes large, abrupt changes in altitude and/or attitude. It usually causes large variations in indicated airspeed. Aircraft may be momentarily out of control.

Occupants are forced violently against seat belts or shoulder straps. Unsecured objects are tossed about. Food service and walking are impossible.

EDIT: Here's a direct link to the reporting criteria table in AIM/FAR.
