Wait List, how does it work....?
 

Hi,

So, just booked a flight from YYZ to HKG on a SAT in Oct. I requested upgrade using SWU for the ORD to HKG segment. BUT I am on waitlist among other 5 or 6 people.

What are the chances of getting cleared from the list and should I call them once a week to check on the status?

Oh, and do SWU have better priority over milage upgrade? or are they the same.
Does status also taken into consideration in addition to the order on the waitlist

A search will return threads with the excruciating details, but off the top of my head it goes, in tie-breaking order,:

1. UA Elite Status
2. Fare Paid
3. Time Added to Waitlist (which I believe is at the airport when you check in).

Someone noted a lot of NC (upgrade) inventory has opened up recently on TransPacific and Oceania routes, so a call back every so often (with a friendly "Can you please check the inventory?" if they respond with "You're still waitlisted.") might score you a confirmation on your upgrade earlier.
