In a certain way, it makes sense. US would provide significant East Coast coverage where UA has none. But I shudder to think that US would impose its brand of LCC-ness onto what is a *flame suit on* fairly decent global airline.

US Airways Said to Be in Talks to Buy United

The UAL Corporation, the parent of United Airlines, and US
Airways are in talks to merge, in a potential deal that would
create one of the world's largest airlines, people briefed on
the matter said on Wednesday.

The negotiations mark the latest efforts to consolidate the
struggling airline industry. Both companies have been vocal
in calling for greater consolidation within the industry to
help prop up falling revenues, with United's chief executive,
Glenn F. Tilton, among the leading proponents for more
mergers.

United and US Airways are deep in their merger discussions,
though a transaction is not expected to be announced for at
least several weeks, these people said, cautioning that talks
may still collapse. One potential hurdle could be union
opposition.

Where are you guys seeing that US might *buy* United? I'm seeing merger, not US buying UA.

Interesting. News Alert from NYTimes did say "US Airways Said to Be in Talks to Buy United." The website, though, says merger.

That was the headline of the NYTimes story. I don't know where they got it, since the article itself is talking merger.

O M G!! US AIRWAYS??? Continental, make your move NOW. But then again, this could be a stunt of United making Continental jealous, thus getting a better deal out of Continental ;) Seriously, all these integration with CO ain't for nothing!

Here's my question: How can UA even think of buying/merging with US when "enhanced" cooperation with CO is still underway?

Yep. When I first saw it the headline was certainly US buys UA.

This is an interesting effort to create perhaps the world's biggest branding disaster. Pass the popcorn.

I certainly hope that there is no merger with US Airways since redeeming miles with them domestically is so costly. Also why would they moving forward with integration with CO and then suddenly lurch towards US? I'm amazed. Maybe the unions will kill the deal, or CO will step up and bid higher and buy UA.
