Upgrade Clearing Time
I am waitlisted on the flight 947 AMS - IAD from Coach to Business on july 1. There are several seats left in Business. How far in advance can I expect the upgrade to be confirmed? Or should I start worrying now?

UA 947 on July 1 looks pretty open still - at least they're still selling seats in all fare classes.
I wouldn't count on them clearing at least until a week before departure. ------------------ When once you have experienced being a 1K, you will forever fly the friendly skies with your eyes set on 100% mileage bonus and SWUs, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return, every year! |
Based on a flight from LHR to LAX last week that was wide open in business (more than 50% open), my associate's upgrade request on a "B" fare did not clear until three days before departure.
Seems to be about par for the course. |
Whereas mine (on H fares) are clearing considerably further ahead than that - anything up to 2 months ahead. (See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/019971.html )

I'm still waiting for a flight ORD - FRA tommorrow (June 9). Y is booked. C is currently showing 9 open. I'm on an M fare and am lowly premier.

I've been seeing my international upgrades not clear until the gate lately. It seems like we are back to the pre-9/11 days.

This morning, I found in My Itinerary that my upgrade had been cleared on the July 1st flight from AMS - IAD. Phew! I did not get the seat I wanted but hey I am not complaining! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks guys! I called and confirmed my upgrade. I now am in! Yey!

You're lucky. I'm on a flight LHR-SFO on Friday, June 13th. It's now 48 hours in advance and my upgrade hasn't cleared. Despite that fact that a helpful IK desk agent told me that Business is only half full.
