AS started the one-way award (for half the miles) a year ago and AA followed. It has been very successful and increased award redemptions. Why would the airlines want to increase award redemptions? Because new accounting rules that took effect last year make the number of miles on thier books a much larger liability. Scott McCartney from the WSJ has talked about this on "The Middle Seat" recently.

As usual UA is simply following whatever AA does.

Let's hope for one-way awards on Star Alliance partners too.

I've kept a constant 14000 miles in AA just for the one way award. Always hesitant to use it because of no status/E-middle seats. 1K w/ UA; now will be able to drop the dAArkside.

Actually, HA started one-way awards several years ago. In fact, on HA, all awards are one-ways.

It will make open jaw trips now bookable online. Example ORD-LAX then return SAN-ORD. Also, First class out and coach back. This is great news.

I love the international stopovers too much: I hope this is a UA-only move and the current *A rules are unaffected.

The AA one-ways are most valuable to me on domestic U.S. segments. I've had a couple of 2.5-cent redemptions on 12.5k awards. Cases where one direction of a trip costs $300+ and the other direction can be bought for $100-150 as a one-way. As long as it's not a peak award travel route/date and AA has a few flight options, chances are good they'll have a coach award seat.

Having the same options on UA would be cool but I hope the entire *A doesn't go this way.

If they get rid of free stopovers with this change, I will vehemently protest to the 1K desk to get rid of one-way awards.

I would be very pleased to see the addition of one-way awards at half the mileage required for a round-trip. Hopefully this is a benefit that will be extended to all Mileage Plus members. Even better would be if we could also redeem one-way Star Alliance awards.
