744 replacing 777 on International Routes starting Spring 2010

It appears that UA will operate a 744 on this route. It appears to be happening from around the end of March '10.
Haven't seen one of these on this route since I've lived in ROK 9 years.
Must have needed 777's for new services.

Hmmm maybe the 777 elite cabin conversion that is supposed to happen in February if I remember right.

It is crazy how many routes UA is upgauging to 747 that have recently been 777 (although 747 in the past):
LAX-NRT
SFO-PEK
ORD-FRA
and now SFO-ICN
Great to see my favorite airplane with new seats deployed on more routes.

Also SFO->PVG, PVG->SFO returns to B747 at the end on March. Assumed it was seasonal change, but could be for seat upgrades.

I'm on the LAX-NRT route this Thursday, UA 891, and it says online it's a 777 config. Do you know something I don't? Is this going to be a 747 flight?

IAD-NRT was only upgauged for the winter season as a result of the seasonal cancellation of IAD-PEK. It was clear in the schedule that it would return to a 777 when IAD-PEK nonstop returns (and NRT-PEK ends), at the beginning of the 2010 summer schedule.

I am talking about the planned 2010 summer schedule which goes into effect at the very end of March. (UA 940/941 ORD-FRA doesn't upgauge until May 1st, however). So LAX-NRT won't become a 747 before your flight next week

You are correct. Read the initial O/P wrong....he was referring to summer season. I guess UA is expecting an improved economy at that point....

is it me or is the 744 utilization not maxed out? It seems like I always see 3 of 'em by the hangars at ORD in the early am and late pm.

I read somewhere that the current 747 schedule requires only 17-18 frames of the 24-strong fleet.

Has this flight been retimed? I noticed in the booking engine its departing at 5PM from ICN and arriving at 11:23AM at SFO, which is more than 3hrs later than usual.

That late departure from ICN allows the 747 to come in and turn basically right around. No more overnites for 893/893.
It certainly does not help with conx in SFO going eastbound.
It might also affect conx in SFO going westbound.

"Planned 2010 summer schedule" wasn't in the plan when UA bid on and won the IAD-PEK slot, which many other airlines were hungry to get. Not sure how UA got permission to redraw the terms of that contract. I am sure that every other U.S. legacy carrier is gnashing teeth over the fact that UA promised daily IAD-PEK nonstops and is permitted to deliver an IAD-NRT-PEK route instead.

And for months beforehand was only serving IAD-PEK 5 days a week, not daily.
