UAL is not my primary airline, but they happen to fly a routing that my primary doesn't do, PHX - SNA/SAN. But both segments (connects in LAX) are operated by SkyWest, so does that really help out UAL directly by buying SkyWest operated tickets? Do they get a small portion of the ticket because it is booked through them?

I am about to buy my ticket on AA today for this route, and hope that someone can give me insight on this before I book later this afternoon.

UA and OO operate 'United Express' branded service on a fee-per-departure basis.

If your fare divided by the actual miles you fly is more than what United is paying SkyWest for an ASM (available seat mile), aka United's CASM, on the route, then United makes money off of you.

Simple enough?

I'm guessing that if your itinerary is exclusively on SkyWest, your fare is kinda high.

It will help United out.

United takes the revenue and risk for operating the flight. SkyWest is paid on a flat fee-per-departure basis on all United Express-operated flights.

A little off topic but this raises a question. The latest issue of ATW lists UA's CASM at 10.85 cents. Does anyone know the CASM for the three UAX carriers?

Amazingly enough, I found a mainline UAL A320 that flies PHX to LAX, flight 1922, leaves at 4:45pm, 6 minutes after flight 6936, a CRJ by Skywest flying the same route.

They must have just addded this very recently.
