How long does it take for miles to post back when cx w/ *A award?
How long would it take for miles to post back if I use MP miles for *A upgrade and cancel that ticket?

for UA upgrades and awards cancellations, re-deposits are usually in a day or so -- many times less.

Cool. I was concerned since flight to be upgraded is not a UA flight.
