One way awards in the pipeline?

Just wondered if there are any plans, no matter how distant, to allow one-way awards.... as AA have done.

Would be nice, particularly after the unlimited upgrades fiasco.

But UA seems intent on only doing bad things to its frequent flyers at the moment, so I wouldn't hold out much hope.

Be careful what you ask for. Take a close look at AA's one-way awards. They do not allow stopovers, so you need to book three one-way awards if you want a stopover.

That's true, I've already encountered that limitation. However you can often get around it for not many extra miles/dollars, assuming the final leg of your stopover is a short one ( I imagine it's normally the case ).

I would trade stopovers for 1 way awards in a heartbeat.

Which again demonstrates that you can't make everybody happy.

Solution: book one way awards with AA (or another airline that allows it), while booking awards that require stopovers with UA (or another airline that allows it).

Disclaimer: this may not work for those who can't find a way to accumulate miles in multiple programs

If you are in a position of having extra miles flown on UA that is above a certain status threshold but not enough for the next threshold, you could consider crediting those miles to bd, which does have one-way *A partner awards.

Based on my frequent searches for saver award availability - the capability to book OB in one cabin, RT in another, would seem to open up many more possible award options. I cringe at using NF miles for a domestic award when one of the main segments ends up in Y. With one-way awards, you would "save" those miles.

I would seriously miss the ability to have stopovers if they mirrored AA.

Give me one-way awards with stopovers as many international programs offer -- there is no inherent reason one-way awards need to preclude stopovers -- and gleff will be a happy flyer.

But this is entirely secondary to Starnet blocking, of course. I'd give up stopovers to end that insane practice.

Might be something in the works: SQ has just published a new set of *A award charts effective 1 December -- one way awards will now be available using KF miles on many *A partners.

Including United......

Links on the SQ forum; post titled New *A Awards.
