Yes, I agree with "1K in Seattle," now that 1K's have to pay for changes it will reduce bumping activity down (unless we "just" checked in on the flight and requested an upgrade -- it happens. Just another reason I make every effort to fly on unrestricted fares, no problem switching flights with fare rules.
As far as 1K's jumping in and bumping you, often, I think we have to clear the list to get on to the plane in the first place, before we can even get on the upgrade list (sometime there is not enough time and the CSR is unwilling to play as it may delay departure). So, sometimes I think that until at least one of those who were already confirmed on the flight gets upgraded to vacate a seat (when flight is full) we can't even get in the door. Sometimes CSR's tell me that I will have to wait for confirmed passengers to clear the list before I get in. But every time they say that, the system puts me to the top of the list as soon as I am off-loaded to the new flight (from the old flight). I actually saw one agent who was upset that I went to the top of the list (oops). Maybe a friendly UAL employee can post and explain this? Bottom line is that even the nice display at the new gates can be over-ridden by this process. You can also lose an upgrade position to International Business or First class passengers being off-loaded on to your flight (they get priority as technically they are now revenue first on the domestic flight). Also FUA customers changing flights can bump the list. Lots of possibilities. And Deadheads. I agree 100% with pdx1M's recommendation, that you ask with the qualification that you "understand the condition is subject to change." Smiles and politeness go a long way (may even get you upgraded on the spot).\ Also -- word to the wise: when they tell you to wait (hold back) during boarding, continue to politely check with the agent as they finish boarding, because I have actually seen the flight depart without the person standing there waiting patiently (was interesting to watch the apology, happened in DEN). |
Well, wait a second, I am only talking about upgrades, not F revenue pax.
Absolutely revenue pax should jump ahead of anyone (as they aren't actually upgrading, just waiting for a seat assignment). As a 1P, I don't find it any more fair that I can bump people down the list simply by calling up to say "I think I'd like to take a different flight today, and still upgrade." I just think there should be a time limit after which it's kind of offensive for us to muscle our way to the fornt of the line and say "out of my I'm a *Gold" |
To be fair, the only times that I bump people is when for some reason my original upgrade request gets taken off. And for a while it was happening every time we requested the upgrade over ual.com We would get to the airport and the upgrade request was never in.

I mean, what a concept! I'm flying some 30K miles on awards this year. If they were paid flights, I would EASILY make Premier Exec. Instead, I'll barely make Premier. Can't have it both ways, I guess! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif Kathy http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
