Checking bags with an overnight stop?
 

Hi there,
Next week I'm flying MSY-ORD-IAD(Overnight)-LHR. I'm on the last flights of the day MSY-ORD-IAD and on the first (daytime) flight from IAD - LHR.

Can I check my luggage all the way through at MSY or will I need to collect it in IAD and recheck it in the morning?

It'd be so useful if this is possible as I can just take my carry on to the hotel for the overnight and not have to wait around for the luggage to be unloaded.

The last time we did this was in 2000, so I don't know if there is new policy.

We flew to DEN - LAX late, got there at midnight. Mr. Boulder's best friend picked up us and our carryons and UA help our honeymoon checked bags.

I believe they made us reclaim them downstairs in the guarded area before heading on to LIH later the next day...

In similar circumstances I have been able to check the luggage through. One case was overnight in SFO, and the other in ORD. (The ORD one was since 9-11.) In each case, I was departing trans-oceanic on the first flight out the next morning.

We flew last flight JFK/SFO, and overnighted for first flight SFO/LIH on July 23 (edit).

Check-in agent at Kennedy said we had to claim the bags, since our layover was more than 4 (6)? hours.

At the SFO baggage claim area, the agent told us that if we didn't claim our bags, they would be locked up till we returned to pick them up. (You have to read between the lines...but my wife was nervous about something happening to our belongings).

Interesting because they do have that 4 hour rule about checking bags. i.e. If you get to the airport at Noon for a 5PM departure, you have to wait an hour to check bags.

This happens to us often, because my family will be at RSW, Mr. BHH and I fly UA, parents fly US, brother/wife fly NW (or whatever cheapest!)
