Codeshare Talks... w/ US
"United Airlines and US Airways are close to code sharing deal that could provide both struggling carriers with benefits of last year's failed $12 billion merger without actually combining the two airlines, several sources familiar with the matter said..."

I'd be happy with this partnership... US is my second preferred carrier after United.
I wonder how this will affect the UA-Delta partnership? (Which I always thought was a bit strange anyway.)

Honestly, I believe that the current talk of a possbile UAL-U codesharing deal is little more than wishful thinking by emps. and shareholders at both airlines.
On the UAL side, at least ALPA is beginning to realize that the current gravy train is unsustainable. The company BADLY needs additional revenue to justify the avoidance of STEEP (30-40%) pay concessions and layoffs that will occur either with a loan guarantee or a formal BK reorganization.
On the U side, it should be remembered that Chairman Steve Wolf was not retained to establish a codeshare or partnership deal with another airline. Wolf's mission is to sell US Airways by any means necessary. Siegel the Newbie could have brokered an alliance all by himself; the BOD wants Wolf's expertise in brokering good airline deals in order to finally end the madness, so to speak. Therefore, IMHO, any "alliance" talks with UAL or anyone else who is not serious about a merger are just diversions while the "big deal" is being negotiated.

I guess this calls for the usual questions:
Are upgrades allowed?
Will my status mean anything on the codeshare?
What will the mileage count toward? Status requalification? Million Mile status?
F & C bonuses apply?

US Million Mile status is based on points, not actual miles flown (I think that is similar to AA?) My dad could not believe it when we told him that UA is based on actual miles flown!

Does anyone have any guesses to the questions posed by Indurain or when such a UA/US code-share agreement would be effective? If the UA/US code share deal happens it would be great to know for fall travel planning if I need to be concerned with being booked as a UA or US flight #. I am most concrened whether US metal flights would count toward 1K requalifications, would 1K bonus miles be awarded, upgrades allowed, and what sort of combo of the FF programs/acrued mileage would be allowed.

SteveDCA, I read in a recent news article that customers would be able to benefit from the code-sharing within 3-6 months. I'm sorry, I don't have the direct link...
However, nothing is done till its done, especially in the airline industry. So don't make plans about what United says it "is close to."

US DOT opens air code-share plan to public comment
The Transportation Department sought public comment on Monday on a code-share proposal by United Airlines and US Airways Group Inc. (NYSE:U - News), the first time the agency has taken that step in reviewing this type of alliance.
