^^ This. It’s still quite a walk from the C gates to the train. At the end of the walk, you have to go up a ramp that takes you to the escalators / stairs down to the train platform. The way that ramp is roped off, it’s pretty narrow. It’s always congested, and if you get stuck behind a family or others walking three abreast, there’s no way around. Huge time killer.

If the latter I would go to the Polaris lounge first in C and then make your way over to the B gates close to departure.
If Y (and either *G or Amex Plat holder), I’d probably go to the TK lounge so you are close to your gate because the regular UC in C isn’t that great.

I'm flying Y with *G. My schedule connection time is only 60mins. Not enough time to enjoy the lounge but want to grab a bottled beer and finish it until the gate.

The moon buggy is quicker if you arrive at a D gate. The train is quicker if you arrive in a C gate.
The actual break-even point is probably a couple of gates into the C gates but you can use C vs. D for simplicity.
I'd probably use around C25 as my break-even point as that would be the approximate point of equal walking distance.

However (overdoing the calculations here, now), in terms of average time break-even, I believe the point would be closer to the actual moon buggy gate (about D9), given the train departs about five times as frequently as the buggy departs. But from wherever you start, if you choose wrong, on average it's about five minutes difference (assuming a conservative walking speed of about 2 miles per hour / 175 feet per minute).
C25/28 to C9 + C9 to train + train to B45: 955ft + 1110ft + 776ft = 2881ft
Should have enough time to pop into LH or TK for a quick bite / drink, assuming you're fine boarding after first called. Might get some pushback if you try to take a beer to the gate though, if that's what you're thinking.

Not that it's a surprise , but you've hit it pretty spot on for the break-even point of walking distance. Looks like it's about C25/C28 — see below.

Timed my journey today (starting at 3pm). Times are from the metro exit.
3:45 mins to “terminal” (did not use moving sidewalks in tunnel)
+:55, 4:40 to top of escalator on ticketing/checkin level (East side by UA)
+:50, 5:30 to entry to Pre-Check
+7:20, 12:50 to exit security (about 2 people in front of me but it was slow, looks like some newer scanning machines)
+6:20, 19:10 to Turkish lounge via walking tunnel to A/B using moving sidewalks
——
Leaving TK lounge, under a minute to LH lounge
LH lounge to train B stop to main to mobile lounge to arrival in D: 12:30. I caught the train right as it arrived but had a 3 min wait for the mobile lounge to depart.
I had a rollerboard with me and walk fairly quickly. YMMV.

Heads up!
IAD is installing the new baggage "tunnel" x-ray machines at the main TSA Pre-check security check point. Looks like 4 are installed with about 3 more to go. I passed through today and the only Pre-Check in use had a magnetometer only, no body scanner. The TSA ID checker was asking every single person if they had metal in their body because if they did they were forced to go elsewhere.
The new lanes are notoriously slower and TSA has acknowledged this.
Use this info as you need to. But for right now if you have metal in your body the main PreCheck check point near the United check-in area is off limits. There was not posting on how long it would be until the new machines are up and running but it looks like just a week or two more.

The bottleneck is the actual scanning and processing of the trays through the machine. TSA seems to think the more people they cram into the line to put their items out, the better. The opposite is true. You get stuck trying to push your tray onto the conveyer because everyone else is fighting for the same place in line.
Sorry to see them expanding use of these.
