When I saw the captain come up the jetbridge and ask for a mic at the gate in BOS, I figured I finally caught one of the Captain Flanagans. Sure enough, I had Captain Denny fly my 757 BOS-ORD this morning. The same stories from this thread apply, although I didn't win a book or wine. The personal note on his business card is a fantastic touch!

I've, unfortunately, never gotten to meet either Captain Flanagan that I know of.

Had my first (of hopefully many!) Capt. Flanagan encounters yesterday, on an IAD-SFO 767 flight. It was pretty much like everybody else has described (intro at the gate, handing out cards, etc.). When I mentioned I knew who he was he immediately asked if I was an FTer (and for my seat number).
Later on an FA stopped by with The Age of Flight and a note/business card. Quite a thrill! My wife and I sent back a thank you note and he remembered us as we were deplaning. Definitely took the sting out of going home after a week in Disney World! ^

There was some announcement about the cards he handed out toward the end of the flight (a drawing or game?), but unfortunately it was too soft to understand and only came across the PA (not the headsets).
After the flight I hung out a bit to thank him for the good flight and turning on channel 9, he asked my about my interest and told me he has something for me. I hadn't read the thread recently or closely enough to know about the book - which of course it was. I am still excited about it - what a wonderful book. Definitely something I will never forget.
I said that I was surprised that in my many flights I hadn't run across him before and that I had heard about him from some of my flyer friends. He said "Flyertalk?"

Fully an honor to fly with him.

Writing this from the LAS President's Club. Just had the pleasure of meeting Capt. Denny Flanagan. He is scheduled to pilot our UA flight from LAS-DEN except for the fact that it just went into a 3 hour mechanical due to some part needing to be flown in from SFO. This gentleman is the epitome of professionalism. Handed everyone his business cards, constant updates about the flight status and where our part was, and even went as far as to buy 200 apples/bananas/oranges from one of the concession stands in the airport with his own money. Saw the vendor deliver him his receipt and credit card back - (do hope United reiumburses him for this!)
Absolutely amazing. My first experience, and I hope to have many more!

If anyone wants to join us for a group mileage run with Captain Denny, we'll be flying with him from San Francisco to Chicago on March 26. See here for full details. There will likely be a FlyerTalk thread in CommunityBuzz about it tomorrow.

Why wouldn't he? International are generally plum assignments.

My brother is a 767 DL Captain. His favorite runs are LAX-LIH and LAX-KOA. He would do those over and over again if he could. He likes some international flying, but he'll take domestic over international any day. Those overwater flights play havoc with your body clock.

So he does do it, albeit not often at all (due to his seniority).

My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Capt. Flanagan on this 757 flight last week:
2/12 UA845 SAN-ORD 10:33-16:24
Was quite surprised when he came out to the gate and got on the microphone. I introduced myself as a long time FTer as were were boarding, and he was standing at the aircraft's entry door. We chatted for a few seconds. Mid-flight the pursrer came to us in 4C/D and presented us with a signed copy of "the book".
He also had the purser invite us into the cockpit at the end of the flight, when the first officer took photos of both of us wearing Capt. Denny's hat. My wife was really taken by this, and I was certainly glad all this took place, as it kinda made her understand why I spend so much time on FT, and do all my crazy flying.
Capt. Denny even called me at home the next day to get my personal email address, so he could email us the photos. What a guy.
He mentioned the FTer gathering scheduled for the 9/11 weekend in DEN, and I will certainly make plans for attending at least parts of that function.
