What Does " 2 STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT" Mean?

I'm looking at some fares from SFO to TPE. The fare rule states " 2 STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT"

What does "pricing unit" refer to, and what does that mean as far as where I can stop over?

The fare I'm looking at is
KLE00VOK if that matters.

That means you can do 2 stopover between SFO and TPE r/t. There is usually a restriction as to where and how and whether it is free.

The detailed rule is the following:

2 STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT - 1 IN EACH DIRECTION AT USD 300.00 EACH NONE IN GUAM

You also need to check transfer rules

5 TRANSFERS PERMITTED IN EACH DIRECTION. 2 PERMITTED IN AREA 1 IN EACH DIRECTION 3 PERMITTED IN AREA 3 IN EACH DIRECTION. FARE BREAK SURFACE SECTORS NOT PERMITTED AND EMBEDDED SURFACE SECTORS PERMITTED ON THE FARE COMPONENT.

And routing rules

There also must be fare class availability on flights in K to purchase that K fare. I suspect in most cases, there will only be K open on the non-stops and trying to throw in a connecting city to get a stopover will result in a signficantly higher fare.

Found an example of a stopover in NRT with K availability and the $300 stopover fee applied.

The formatting didn’t come through well on the routing list, but this is key. It means that you can add a $300 stopover in each direction provided that you can find applicable flights with inventory in the right booking class, and the stopover is in one of the city codes listed in the routing table that isn’t GUM.

For example, you could fly SFO-MNL // stopover // MNL-TPE, with MNL-TPE on EVA, if EVA had corresponding inventory. Note that these are city codes, not airport codes — TYO is Tokyo, SEL is Seoul, OSA is Osaka. You can use any airport in that city; so, another option would be SFO-HND // stopover // HND-TSA.

K on UA, and almost certainly K on NH. Some corresponding discount fare class on other airlines, depending upon what UA has negotiated.

You can use ITA Matrix to look for options where this prices out.

So "pricing unit" means any city on the routing table? I have access to that from Expertflyer.

If UA/NH flights are available in K class, you could also do SFO-HND // stopover // NRT-TSA or SFO-NRT // stopover //HND-TSA to get a Tokyo stopover. The city codes allow co-terminals.

Or it could be the opposite, as the stopover availability could be better than connecting city availability. People complain here that the trip logic prevents them from putting an itinerary together going segment by segment. I assume there is no trip logic if you have a stopover (as opposed to a connection.)
For example, if you need V class seats, doing a connection in an intermediate city might not show V class available for a connection in the intermediate city, but a stopover would not have trip logic and could allow V class to and from the intermediate point, so long as the stay in the intermediate city is more than 24 hours.

Interesting to play with this - SFO to TPE with a stop in TYO is $1,073, a ticket to Tokyo with the same dates is $1,470. Also, the TYO fare is Basic Economy, while the TPE fare is regular coach, so free seats slec

No. A pricing unit is part of fare construction. Fare components are grouped into pricing units for the purpose of ticketing. The wording here would indicate that you could not introduce three stopovers on a circle trip using this fare, even if the individual fare components each allowed a stopover and each allowed circle trip pricing — because the circle trip is the pricing unit.
