I had a GS agent proactively reaching out to me. I was invited to attend sporting events (i.e. ATP tournament), participated in sampling new menus months before they were introduced on the flight, on a star alliance customer feedback panel (physical meeting) representing United, and periodically given paper SWU vouchers and op-upgrade from C to F in international three-cabin was quite common. Everything was going great until dotcom crash in 2000 and 9/11. It was the late 90s and none of the the then GS benefits were publicly known unlike the 2003 relaunch.
