What ARS? Most of the systems I am aware of (Sabre, Apollo) were all IBM Assembler. Some did some C370 and then moved from mainframe to distributed systems. Amadeus was built on the SystemOne platform. Most of the independent in-house reservation systems (US Air in the 1980's (Pacer) and Piedmont for sure) were on the SystemOne pricing code. I think PARS (TWA) PANAMAC (Pan Am) and Deltamatic (Delta) were also IBM mainframe in Assembler.

So, philosophically, I agree with you. However, heres why I think it matters. For the flights where they have a discount fare that disallows travel on the lie-flat or, the restrictions theyve had for years that say you cant route, e.g., WAS-SFO via EWR you could buy the more expensive fare and then route it across non-lie-flat flights, and it would price out exactly the same. But in this case, if you price out that same fare on non-lie-flat equipment, the Q surcharge doesnt kick in. So its not oh, I wish I had known; I could have bought this flight for less if I had selected a cheaper fare. Its oh, I would have been charged less for this very same fare if Id chosen these flights myself.

I seldom fly routes where 757-200 aircraft are available. But if I do, I will definitely screenshot the fare rule Q equipment surcharge provision upon purchase.

Today - another added Q surcharge popped up in the IAHEWR market - day of the week! It appears to be for both classes of svc. As you can see below - it is Q37.21, but I have priced several OW fares it comes out in the linear as 2x this amount - or 74.42! I am appalled! - at this point... all travel purchasing is on hold. Let's hope this "new" Q surcharge gets fixed.

That's normal - surcharges based on peak days has been the main use of that category.

Perhaps not directly related and/or deserving of its own thread, but I've also seen fare rules that have time of day restrictions, seemingly to compete with NK during times that they operate and effectively creating a surcharge for other times. For example, EWR-PIT has Tue/Wed/Sat fares filed down to G/K valid for 5pm departures and later (NK has a 5:30pm nonstop), whereas only W fares and up are valid for travel before 5pm.

The Delta domestic First Class fare surcharges for D1 equipment are in the fare rules on all domestic FC fares and do not vary by route (they are not in domestic D1 fares since they are definitionally flown on D1 equipment). Note that the fare surcharges do not include 7.5% domestic US Excise tax. So a surcharge of of $37.21 ends up being $40.00 and a surcharge of $69.77 ends up being $75.00, etc. Here are DL's domestic FC surcharges by D1 equipment -- A330/A350 = $93.02/$100, B757/767 = $69.77/$75, ex-LA A350 = $46.51/$50.

Delta also has fare surcharges on a number of peak demand days around major holidays, and deep discount fares can have blackout dates around holidays.

That is not true. Service charges are listed as Q - this is common to add hundreds of NUCs into an internation over the water fare. The TW are cheaper is found in the actual fare basis itself L00STWFS (a made-up example) - a fare that is only good on Tues/Wed and only on certain flights on those days. This is the first time EVER i am seeing a Q for a day of the week - I was a rate agent.

It is true it may just be a more recent innovation. UA publishes a lot of fares with peak day surcharges. Not TWSa restrictions youre right about those. But theyll code in Q surcharges like USD18.60 for travel on April 9, April 16-22, or April 28, and then USD27.90 for travel on May 5 etc. I first noticed it several years ago.

The YQ international (fuel) surcharge youre talking about might be stored in Q in some system that you have / had access to, but Ive never been able to find it in ExpertFlyer.

Also agree that I have never seen YQ/YR encoded in the fare rules and it's really annoying. I doubt it is actually easy to look up programmatically, since otherwise dumping it wouldn't be possible.

(236 *TWA - for my abbreviations H=Thursday and A=Saturday). Flight times or flight specific are not as readily seen, but a simple letter(s) combination could easily tell us. My attention to detail regarding the "linear" is from previous job experience. I always read the linear, and I can tell you in the 38 years I have been flying UA, I have never seen UA use a Q to add to the fare for Date/Time issues. Why do they need a Q, when they have 548 other opportunities of putting that into the fare basis?

I have 3 FC tickets on the 757-200 and 777 in bookings for later this year with the Q69.77 - hopefully, I will not see a downgauge of equipment.

On the other hand, if there is an equipment downgauge, perhaps that would be a basis to get the Q charge refunded?

No kidding. I skipped over this thread thinking it was about a questionable charge that showed up (like someone got overcharged for Wi-Fi or a 1K got charged for a Y snack).
