UA & AA agree to $8.5B ORD remodel of Terminal 2 (first announced in 2018)
SimpleFlying: United And American Airlines Reach Agreement On $8.5 Billion Chicago O'Hare Remodel
the agreement announced on Friday will help expand O’Hare’s gate capacity by 25 percent, enabling the airport to accommodate a wider range of aircraft, improve gate access for arriving aircraft, reduce delays and more. United Airlines "We are pleased that Mayor Johnson and his aviation department have put forth a phasing plan that will ensure that TAP funds are first spent on the mission-critical portions of the program — the O’Hare Global Terminal and Satellite 1. The Global Terminal has always been the centerpiece of this program and the crucial piece needed to ensure Chicago maintains its status as a global hub. Under this new phasing plan, we can deliver the most impactful elements of the modernization project the quickest." We are excited to move forward on this project so our customers traveling to and from Chicago can enjoy the benefits. We look forward to collaborating with the Mayor and his aviation department on the budget, scope and design of the project so that together, we can not only deliver the modernized airport envisioned in the 2018 lease contract but also ensure O'Hare's future financial stability and competitiveness for years to come." |
All along the message has been the satellite concourses, or at least one of them, had to be completed before the existing T2 could be torn down to make way for the new Global Terminal. Now they’re saying this?

UA F (and E) gates are in Terminal 2, so will there is reduction in gates in the meantime?

Can't wait for pay for this in higher fares, while it struggles through development delays and corruption over the next decade+.
Are they going to clear out the homeless land side? Or is that not considered in the airport's "global status"? |

It does help that DL moved from T2 to T5 last year. |

Over/under on the actual cost? What if the line was set at $10.75B?
|
I have to believe the C and high L concourse extensions would have to be completed first, before They bulldoze the E/F concourse for the new T2.
|
Gates E and F are a mess. Without the waiting areas for Groups 1 and 2, it is complete chaos at boarding.

This story in the Chicago SunTimes adds some needed clarity:
The new agreement will allow the city to proceed with construction and operation of the first satellite concourse while planning a phased construction of the global terminal that would replace existing gates at what is now Terminal 2. https://chicago.suntimes.com/city-ha...41.5%20billion |

As pointed out by multiple posters, it seemed impossible the two satellites could be delayed/cancelled in favor of the new terminal to replace T2. https://chicago.suntimes.com/city-ha...41.5%20billion I still can’t see how this new plan isn’t going to lead to a massive gate crunch for United. Unless the E concourse is currently highly under utilized with the movement of Delta to T5 and new gates there. E+F is something like 40 gates and satellite 1 looks to be something like 10-12. |

It hadn’t really occurred to me (mainly because I haven’t been paying attention) that UA and AA wouldn’t want all the new gates because it would invite competition. I had assumed all the new gates would go to them.

Per this press release, Satellite 1 will have 19 gates:

That's still a huge reduction in gates for UA. Other than a couple used by Alaska and a couple used by Air Canada, they own T2, with an increasing amount of it being used for mainline flights. Are they planning on eliminating RJ flights from ORD?
