Also note that the affected list is sorted by airport abbreviation/identifier and not by city name.

I was scheduled to fly MCI-EWR at 0600 today and got the email yesterday afternoon advising of severe weather which may impact my trip. The inbound was scheduled to fly EWR-MCI last night, though it returned to the gate after 90~ minutes of sitting adjacent to a runway. The flight returned to the gate and ultimately canceled.

luckily I checked the status of the reservation beforehand and was able to get rebooked via DEN to LGA. UA.bomb kept me in F (expiring plus points got me up front). I have a feeling I wouldn’t have been traveling if I waited until this morning to rebook as everything is packed.

Another wonderful summer on the east coast ….

I was on a flight (LAS-ORD) that was diverted (to IND) last night because of the weather bearing down on ORD. As we approached, the pilot was given a flight path that took is right next to some awesome storm cells with classic anvil-shaped clouds towering above us. The atmosphere, other than the storm, was clear giving us a beautiful view from the starboard port windows. As the sunlight faded, continual lightning became visible. The sight was incredible.

How many cumulative travel waivers are we up to now for UA this month?

I am traveling on another carrier today, and I am in the "affected area". No waivers as far as I can tell. I don't even see any waiver for the entire past week.

I am the first person to explain to people that weather doesn't have to be at/near an airport to cause ATC delays. Weather over the routes to/from the airport causes ATC delays too.

However, I can't help but feel that something at the FAA is severely broken right now.

Thank you for sharing. Perhaps you mean port side indicates by wing tip.

Exactly. I've been a reasonably frequent flyer for decades, and I've never seen anything like last night's debacle at LGA, even during blizzards and thunderstorms. In fact, in May I took off from ORD with lightning going off in the distance.

Something is broken somewhere, clearly.

Lot of cancellations tonight EWR

Looks like lots of cancelled flights tonight at EWR most RJs and others. Looks like most of the bad weather will be north of the airport. Why does this hub operation fall apart on a regular basis. Why not delay flights around weather and not cancel.
Other hub airports in particular PHL and DTW dont do that far less cancellations.

There is a finite capacity both at the airport and the airspace surrounding the airport at any given time.

When weather significantly impacts the area you lose that capacity. The remaining capacity is spoken for by other scheduled flights, pilots and flight attendants have duty limits, etc. Therefore it can be better to control the situation by proactively/strategically thinning the schedule rather that trying to fit 50 pounds of flights in a 30 pound sack and playing wheel of fortune with what is going to fall out.

Better for everyone to hold flights on the ground or cancel than have a bunch of metal running low on fuel diverting around weather.

Conditions at the airport are one thing -- conditions in the flight arrival / departure corridors in what is likely the busiest airspace in the world are another -- that's the real issue....

Atc had fca up in the region limiting arrival rates to the region. The knock on effect is that these rates will cause a canx because there are only so many slots that are available.
