Second Daily EWR_DEL_EWR flight on UA (from Oct-28-2023)

Hello All,
UA is starting a second daily flight from EWR_DEL and DEL_EWR

hat tip to:

I did not see this discussion on FT.
(Mods please merge if there is a discussion on this topic).

The flight departs EWR in the morning (about 9AM), reaches DEL next day 10AM or so.
Departs DEL around noon; reaches EWR same day by 7:40PM.

Not well timed for connections from the south of the USA.
But, I guess northeast / LAX/SFO folks can connect either early morning or overnight (if LAX/SFO).

United sells connections on Vistara and some times AI to cities within India. It remains to be seen if this will hold if Vistara and AI merge. This flight would be good for connections at DEL. However from US only some cities connect (most of south and west/midwest do not).

Not well timed for most US domestic connections. 9am departure is too early for almost all inbound arrivals save for a few redeyes and regional 1st flights of the day. Also have to factor in terminal transfer and EWR not having a gate, etc.

740pm arrival cuts off most departures after factor in immigration and customs process.

Aside from EWR, all other UA flights to/from India are still suspended I am assuming?

EWR-DEL is such a huge local market that connections are hardly an issue. It also enables a wider array of onward connecting options at DEL, with EWR-BOM not operating for the foreseeable future and UA/EK codesharing to the subcontinent over DXB blocked by the Indian government.

There are enough people of Indian origin within a 2-3 hour drive of EWR or that have family and friends around NJ and NY that this flight shouldn’t need that much early morning arrival flight feeder traffic to fill the seats. Pricing power is going to determine if this route will fly or flop or for UA.

Insofar as advance bookings will no longer be accepted, yes. The business case remains, but the operational case is impossible until Russian airspace is available.

Indeed, this flight will make it easy for connections on the Indian side.
(The other DEL flight lands around 9:30PM...and makes it very difficult to connect to many places in India....requiring an overnight in DEL at least for a few hours).

Might not be an official codeshare yet, but you can purchase EWR-DXB-BOM on United.com

Right... UA can sell the ticket, but the DXB-BOM leg will have an EK flight number, no UA code. It impacts the way the flight can be marketed.

They should introduce direct flight from EWR to BLR or EWR to HYD Hyderabad. Both have nice airports and long runway to handle A380. Both are fast growing cities in South India. Maybe American or Delta introduce direct flights to BLR or HYD.I think Delhi and Mumbai airports are crowded and transit is always hassle.

How would UA/DL/AA fly to BLR/HYD without flying over Russian airspace? Both from JFK/EWR are over 8,000mi on most direct over Russia routing. Even AC YYZ-BOM at 7,775mi had to switch to YYZ-LHR-BOM to make the longer routing work.

Agreed you cannot have nonstop flight to BLR/HYD, instead of nonstop from NYC airports to BLR/HYD, they can have one stop in LHR/FRA/AMS until Russian airspace opens. Transit at Mumbai and Delhi is hassle.
