Normally, we do go to the lounge, but there was no time. We had a short connection (~80 minutes), and the incoming UA flight was 40 minutes late. By the time we got through passport control and to the gate area in A, it was just about at the published boarding time. Lesson learned, though. We have a similar connection in a couple of weeks but more time - will definitely get a new BP at the Senator Lounge.

Another question. Changed out flights so now its only a 4-5 hour layover.

Is that enough time to store luggage and head to town for a quick lunch and stroll before going back to the airport? I was thinking of hopping on the rail and it looks like theres some shops by that main station.

we arrive around noon and depart at 4:45pm

Do you have to claim your luggage at FRA? You will have to clear immigration, store carry on bags, find the train, find a place to eat during the busy lunch time, then grab your stored items, go back through security and find your gate in a large airport. Does the flight arrive at Noon or is that when you expect to be off the plane. I would say with an airport as big as FRA, the answer would be no . . . but the older I get the more risk adverse I become. Lots of delayed flights this summer. Crowded airports, etc. Train is 5 and each stored bag is 6.50 for up to 4 hours.

Bags should be checked through to Rome (I hope) since entire trip is one married itinerary. Flight schedules to arrive at noon. I guess Ill have to wait and see when were all settled.

Is security going back through efficient? Will there be an expedited lane for star alliance gold for LH?

not a lot of time here. If you really want to go it should work out to give you 1.5 hours in downtown Frankfurt. You can get off the S-Bahn at a variety of downtown station depending on what you want to do with your time. Security can be backed-up in FRA even for premium pax; you'd have to leave Frankfurt by 3 at the very latest IMO.

3 sounds like a solid time to leave. Maybe well skip lunch and just walk around the area of the big station and take in what we can.

Star Alliance Gold transiting through FRA with two children on UA plated ticket. Could only bring one guest in. When I asked whether I could purchase an entry for the second child, was told no because it was a 016 ticket and not a 022 ticket. Good data point to have.

No fun. Sorry to hear this. And LH is not known for its flexibility.
