Star Alliance Gold members eligible for CPU

Are *G members eligible for CPU on United flights? I'm a *G (Krisflyer) but whenever I fly on United, I don't get put on the CPU / upgrade list. I spoke to customer care and they said that it's a system automated process and they can't do anything. However one time I spoke to an agent at the EWR United Club and I was manually put on the list. I was subsequently upgraded to Business.

Grateful for any thoughts because customer care is not helpful.

THank you!

CPU is only for United's own premier members. As *A Gold, you are eligible for UC access. Your past experience with CPU may be a mistake.
I flew Air New Zealand recently. The only treatment for *A Gold is the early boarding and lounge access. I had to pay for a more spacious economy seat. ANZ does not have FC seats on A320.

NZ will give you a preferred seat free of charge if you call, FYI - used to be the case that other *G could select for free online but that got wiped out sometime during the pandemic

Nope. I did call as soon as I made the reservation. I asked for this benefit but was refused.

Thank god its not available to * Golds. The CPU list is long enough as it is with just United's premier.

If they were at the bottom of the list, it wouldn't make any difference. I can't even remember the last time we were upgraded as UA Gold.

Same with me. It was $20- per preferred seat. Not only that, the NZ agent got pretty lippy with me for daring to ask for something for free.

I'll add to this, while you won't get on then CPU list, United still can see your status and give you a not-zero-but-almost-zero priority for operational upgrades (if economy is oversold but business isn't and all United elites are upgraded).

Happened to me but on Air Canada. This is a very, very rare thing though because you need to count on not having at least 6-24 (depends on plane type) United elites at any level without a companion and economy to legitimately be oversold....but there are some reports out there if you dig through here.

Ive had a few lucky experiences receiving opups on Star Alliance carriers, simply because they had no one else to give the Business class seat to and Economy was oversold. Could a non-UA Star Gold get an opup on United? Sure, but only after Uniteds GS, 1K, Platinum, Gold, and Silver members have been considered.

One thing to note also is you can get Economy Plus seats as *A Gold.

Head to the gate a bit before boarding and check the seatmap on the app, if there are still Economy Plus seats unclaimed or even just better paid Economy seats, just mention you are Star Gold and would like x seat, usually they will do it. 100% success rate on US based flights for me, of course the only time I got a no was from LHR to LAX and they were demanding money; while the outgoing flight to London they gave me an Economy Plus seat just fine.

Getting free E+ as *G has been discussed ad infinitum over the years, and it is very much YMMV. It is certainly not a published benefit and UA is entitled to charge you for it. There are actually many FT members who are *G on another *A carrier but also have Silver or Gold on UA for free E+.

If you are a couple traveling together one tip is to transition one person to United status as there are companion benefits.

Both my parents had status on EVA air for years which they mainly flew.

Transitioned my mom to United so they could at least get e+ for free which they were paying for.

They still get domestic United lounge access through the other persons EVA status.
