United Opens Its Largest Club in the Country
Photos(1)

New, 30,000 sq.-ft. United ClubSM at Newark Liberty International Airport offers more modern United brand experience with views of the Manhattan skyline, close to 500 seats, spa-like shower suites and a barista-staffed coffee shop

Opening comes just before Memorial Day, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year

CHICAGO, May 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced the opening of its new, nearly 30,000 square-foot United Club location at Newark Liberty International Airport, offering travelers a modern design, enhanced amenities and culinary offerings, locally-sourced art and furniture pieces and views of the Manhattan skyline. Located in Terminal C3 near gate C123, this club is the largest club in United's network, and is opening just in time for the Memorial Day holiday, which the airline expects will be one of its busiest travel weekends so far this year.

"As more and more customers return to the skies, United is committed to delivering a superior customer experience on and off the plane, especially in increasingly crowded airports," said Aaron McMillan, United's managing director of hospitality and planning. "Our new Newark Club location is carefully designed with the customer at the forefront with thoughtful touches like murals and dcor that reflect the local community. This design theme and commitment to creating a locally-inspired experience will set the precedent for future club openings and renovations across our network."

The Newark United Club location features a new design and reflects a modern take on the United Club experience. It showcases many firsts for the club, as well as existing premium offering, including the following:
  • The largest club in our network: The club features more than 480 seats across spaces for lounging, working, private dining and socializing.
  • Spa-like showers: Members can freshen-up in one of the six, spa-like shower suites at Newark, stocked with Sunday Riley products.
  • Coffee shop experience: Staffed by a barista ready to prepare their favorite hand-crafted drinks, flyers can get inspired at the full-service coffee bar, featuring illy signature blend of 100 percent Arabica beans, in addition to culinary offerings in all United Clubs, like complimentary beverages and snacks.
  • Modern, Newark-inspired design: Flyers can enjoy unmatched views of the Manhattan skyline amidst locally-sourced furniture pieces and dcor, as well as the new design and color scheme that will be rolled-out in future new and refurbished clubs. The space also includes modern amenities, like self-scan entry for quick access and free, high-speed Wi-Fi.
  • Sustainable, green materials: As part of the airline's sustainability commitment, the Club is designed with sustainable materials and features, such as WaterSense-rated fixtures, enhanced indoor air quality, green cleaning and more.
Additionally, in collaboration with The Newark Museum of Art and Gallery Aferro, the new club location prominently features two murals created by local artists, Gilbert Hsiao and Dahlia Elsayed. Inspired by the musical legacy in the Newark area and United's iconic history, Hsiao's mural, located in the club's entryway, is a deceptively simple, eye-catching piece featuring dots and circles to represent abstract beats in space as well as nod to the United globe. Elsayed's artwork, situated in the club's lounge, is an abstract and textural piece, referencing Arshile Gorky's famous 1936-67 murals at EWR, with imagery inclusive of built and natural environments of the New York / New Jersey area.

"The Newark Museum of Art is honored to be a part of this remarkable tribute to our community and our city," said Linda Harrison, The Newark Museum of Art's director and CEO. "May these tremendous artworks inspire and remind our residents and visitors of Newark's role as a cultural hub for artistic excellence and community cultivation. We are so proud to contribute to this exciting unveiling and pay homage to our special city with these two extraordinary works of art."

"Artists like Gilbert Hsiao and Dahlia Elsayed have a gift, which is to make the world new for us over and over again," said Emma Wilcox, Gallery Aferro's co-founder. "Gallery Aferro is thrilled to see these acclaimed alumni of our residency and fellowship program gain a new global audience of travelers with this project."

The Newark United Club location is the first of a series of United Club locations to open with the new club design and amenities. It's part of United's ongoing commitment to renovate and introduce new United Club locations throughout its network and provide a more modern United brand experience. Can't agree. You really have to visit some Polaris Lounges to make the comparison.

It is not on the same level as the Polaris Lounge. PL better in every measure...seating, crowds, bar service, dining, travel assistance, etc.
Which is as it should be.

Went through today at around 12:30 pm after arriving from CDG. Not super crowded. I feel like I'm a victim of over-hype, having read all the reviews and seen all the pictures. It was perfectly nice, and the taco buffet was tasty (had a little bit of carnitas with some guac -- well done), but I can't imagine this space won't look like a messy zoo in no time.

Here are some more photos. A small sample is below. The fill collection is in my Google Drive linked below.

Google Drive

Also, here are some 360 photos that I took, similar to the bubbles on Google street View.
(Since they are a true 360, I was unable to keep myself out of it)
You will need a special viewer for them, something designed specifically for 360 photos.
I have a Mac and have "Spherical Viewer" from the App Store. I don't remember if I paid for it or not.

Yes. That's one of the downfalls to 360 photography - it's almost impossible to hide yourself.

They accept the 1 time use Chase Explorer Visa passes as well - I used them this morning. Though I suspect they will be the first to be blocked once they approach capacity.

Got to visit the C123 lounge today for the first time. I was supposed to be there on Friday but thanks to a line of storms that went through EWR and 3 cancelled flights I finally wound up having to change departure airports and do a mad dash. I digress...

The positives:
- The space is great. It's not your typical lounge and definitely has a unique feeling to it which makes it feel "special" as compared to the pop-up or just most regular UCs out there
- The taco bar was good. The carnitas was on the dry side but had decent flavor. The guac had no flavor at all but it looked fresh.
- There were 3 bartenders working which made the lines move relatively quick
- SHOWERS! This is my first non-PL shower in a UC in who knows how many years. A few downsides to this (see below) but just happy to have the ability to take a shower after getting off an intercontinental flight
- It is absolutely not on the same level as a PL but it's absolutely several steps above any other 'normal' United Club in the network.

The negatives (subjective and IMO obvi):
- Can someone please tell me why the shower rooms in every lounge I go to are set to 80F or higher? This new lounge is no exception.
- No one at the check-in desk for the showers. After waiting 5 minutes I walked down the hallway and found someone who was washing towels. She just grunted and pointed me to an open door with a shower.
- No supplies whatsoever were provided or offered for the shower
- Fruit flies and larger flies in a lot of spots. Unacceptable for a brand new space but food gone bad in the back already? Maybe related to how hot the shower rooms are?
- You can't self-serve the mini sandwiches. I don't get it. What's so different about the sandwiches vs the buffet and salad bar that everyone is touching the handles on?
- I entered the lounge mid-afternoon on a Monday and it was packed. Took me 2 full walks of the whole lounge to find a seat. To their credit, UA had plenty of staff roaming the lounge to pick up dirty plates, wipe down seats, etc. but it was a mad house.

Bottom line...a huge step up for United and I'm happy to see it. I hope they re-use this concept in other new UCs that will pop up.

I take that as a Positive, I don't want to eat a sandwich that several dozen people have ACCIDENTALLY touched!

How else are we supposed to gain immunity? Lots of flavor too!

There are tongs to take the sandwiches just the same as there are tongs for the salad and taco bars. What's the difference? Someone "accidentally" touching your lettuce is somehow OK but not a cold, nasty sandwich? (Personal opinion on them being nasty. I am NOT a fan of cold, hard bread -- ever. Which is basically what's served on planes now anyway so I don't touch it).

I assume they ran out of salmon?

BTW at 8am today, plenty of seats, even the sexy brown Eames style with footrest.

Hmmm, this looks familiar . . .

And, more importantly, are the tiny paper coffee cups permanent? A club deserves mugs IMHO.

Also, overheard someone entering the multigender restroom that the "lock is broken". Sigh.

I love mugs too and asked about them. Nope, just paper cups. So I'll bring my own.

I was also in the lounge yesterday and it was indeed packed (no day passes being accepted in the middle of the afternoon) and stayed pretty packed until 9 or so, an hour before closing. Had the misfortune of being caught in rolling delays so got to spend quite a bit of time here. Perhaps the many delays contributed to some of the crowding. Most people there that I overheard seemed pretty impressed with the club.

My thoughts:
  • Baristas were friendly and proactively welcoming. Too bad they're in the back so you don't see them when you walk in.
  • The new automated entry system's alarm constantly goes off, so sitting in the back is better so you don't constantly hear it. People were struggling with the system so they had to have a person full-time at the automated entry system anyways.
  • Did a full lap of the place when I first got in and there only seats available for two were near the entrance and it mostly remained that way for the duration of our stay. Even if seats became open in the back I wasn't willing to pack up and move and potentially lose our existing seat due to lack of seating.
  • The club looks great. Hit up the old club a week prior and it's a significant improvement. If you get a seat in the back along the windows I'd imagine it's great if you like watching planes come and go.
  • Food is certainly better than the old club. The sandwiches were a miss with us (bread seemed stale) but the taco/fajita bar was pretty good.
  • The expanded beer selection is great. Though there were 3-4 bartenders working (only ever saw 2 at most at the old club), there was still a decent line most of the time and the bartender I got a drink from said she had to walk to the other end of the bar to get a beer each time someone ordered one because her draft beer dispenser was out of beer.
  • Seating/charge ports are way way better.
  • SO was very impressed with all the flavored water/juices available near the entrance.
  • Loved that they had multiple water bottle refill stations. This needs to be in EVERY club.
tl;dr, in spite of the crowds and limited seating at times, this is way better than the old club and can't wait for them to renovate that old club in the next few years. Once those two are up and running concurrently I would imagine some of the crowding issues will get significantly better. Hope the quality of the food is maintained over time...

Flies and fruit flies will find their way in if there's open containers of fruit-related substances (fruit, wine, etc.). Has nothing to do with spoiled food.

Probably due to the fact that many people think they have access to the club if they are flying first class.
