CHICAGO, May 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced the opening of its new, nearly 30,000 square-foot United Club location at Newark Liberty International Airport, offering travelers a modern design, enhanced amenities and culinary offerings, locally-sourced art and furniture pieces and views of the Manhattan skyline. Located in Terminal C3 near gate C123, this club is the largest club in United's network, and is opening just in time for the Memorial Day holiday, which the airline expects will be one of its busiest travel weekends so far this year.

"As more and more customers return to the skies, United is committed to delivering a superior customer experience on and off the plane, especially in increasingly crowded airports," said Aaron McMillan, United's managing director of hospitality and planning. "Our new Newark Club location is carefully designed with the customer at the forefront with thoughtful touches like murals and dcor that reflect the local community. This design theme and commitment to creating a locally-inspired experience will set the precedent for future club openings and renovations across our network."
The Newark United Club location features a new design and reflects a modern take on the United Club experience. It showcases many firsts for the club, as well as existing premium offering, including the following:
"The Newark Museum of Art is honored to be a part of this remarkable tribute to our community and our city," said Linda Harrison, The Newark Museum of Art's director and CEO. "May these tremendous artworks inspire and remind our residents and visitors of Newark's role as a cultural hub for artistic excellence and community cultivation. We are so proud to contribute to this exciting unveiling and pay homage to our special city with these two extraordinary works of art."
"Artists like Gilbert Hsiao and Dahlia Elsayed have a gift, which is to make the world new for us over and over again," said Emma Wilcox, Gallery Aferro's co-founder. "Gallery Aferro is thrilled to see these acclaimed alumni of our residency and fellowship program gain a new global audience of travelers with this project."

Obviously a huge upgrade.
Looks like seating is weighted in favor of tables over lounge space. Noticed this at DL's new LAX SkyClub, seems to be a trend. I guess it allows them to seat more people in the same space, but personally I will generally prefer kicking back in an easy chair to sitting at a table.

A few more notes:
- when this club opens, the C-1 club will close for a full-gut renovation that should last about a year to a year and a half. When it reopens, it will have a similar design to this club, though a bit smaller at 17,000sf
- the new A club is under development, but is likely going to open late 2022 or early 2023. The lounge will be 12,500sf (8000sf originally, plus 4500sf from Air Canada) and feature a terrace similar to the United Club at LGA
- New A will be mostly mainline with an O&D focus. There are a few gates that will be widebody-capable. United will have 10 preferential-use gates and access to as many as 6 more on a common-use basis
- The east/odd side of C-2 will be converted to regional gates
Not anymore. Showers are coming to most, if not all hub lounges under development.
The new bathrooms are much larger and should be sufficient. I would say at least 6-8 stalls and a similar number of urinals on the mens side. Each shower suite (6) has a full bathroom and a really nice shower stall with subway tile, rainfall head and hand wand.
Supposedly the food service was reflective of what will actually be offered in regular use. The bar service for the event was full-comp including the higher end items that will be for sale. Going forward, all draft beers at United Clubs will be free, including the micro/local beer selections. This will reportedly feature prominently at the new DEN clubs.
6 showers, 4 of the new style self-serve espresso machines in two locations around the lounge, plus a barista station. The look is intended to be "urban loft", reflective of the loft-style location of the lounge and proximity to Manhattan. The custom tilework (UA negative space Globe, NLIA sign in New York City subway style), local artwork, exposed brick and industrial light fixtures are some great details that support this design language. IMV, it compares favorably to the Polaris Lounge from a design perspective, and has spectacular Manhattan views. There's even a foosball table!
Reportedly, this is the start of a new local focus on design at United Clubs. Rather than a generic, cookie-cutter template, each new club will incorporate local elements. As an example, DEN will have a "modern mountain lodge" design motif.
It really has a completely new look and feel. Not at all what I was expecting from United and a pleasant surprise, to me.
There are lots of seating options for the buffet dining, though, including booths for 4, bistro-style tables and large communal tables.
Lots of great new furniture, including couches, lounge chairs (with footrests), laptop nooks and lots of more conventional lounge seating.
DEN East will have an outdoor patio and fireplaces, spread over three levels. The outdoor patio will be about 2-3x the size of the one at the LAX United Club. With the outdoor space, DEN B-East will be the largest Club in the system (taking over the top spot from this lounge) in excess of 30k/sf. DEN B West will be identical to B East, when it opens in a few years.
There are plenty of easy chairs, including some true lounge chairs (somewhat reminiscent of an Eames chair, or the recliner chairs in LH Senator Lounges) throughout the Club. Though I suspect these will be in high demand.

Looks great - can't wait to use it on my next trip (EWR is home base)! My only comment is that I hope that bathrooms are designed better. Using the redone LAX UC (and the Boston UC) as a template, I have found that UA makes their bathrooms nice but also ends up including too few facilities for the size of the actual UC. Same criticism goes for the redone UC in A2 at EWR.

Not to rain on everyone's picnic, but this is a familiar scene with United - a brand new item that screams high class and quality, only to little by little be chipped away to the sub-par service we've come to expect. While the lounge looks great and I intend to use it while it's brand new, I'm skeptical it will remain this nice for more than a few years.

I guess they took what they learned from building the LAX club and are now applying it to EWR and DEN. At LAX it was more obvious during construction that they were building a brand new building on top of the existing terminal. Looks like they are doing the same for EWR and DEN but confining the new floors to within the building.

Can you imagine if they had built in a way to board directly from the UC those flights at the gates located below? It's such a squeeze when they're boarding two adjacent widebody flights simultaneously between C125 and C136. I love the direct-from-lounge boarding at places that have it, like FRA (for LH, of course. For UA I usually end up on a bus).
