New, 30,000 sq.-ft. United ClubSM at Newark Liberty International Airport offers more modern United brand experience with views of the Manhattan skyline, close to 500 seats, spa-like shower suites and a barista-staffed coffee shop

Opening comes just before Memorial Day, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year

CHICAGO, May 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced the opening of its new, nearly 30,000 square-foot United Club location at Newark Liberty International Airport, offering travelers a modern design, enhanced amenities and culinary offerings, locally-sourced art and furniture pieces and views of the Manhattan skyline. Located in Terminal C3 near gate C123, this club is the largest club in United's network, and is opening just in time for the Memorial Day holiday, which the airline expects will be one of its busiest travel weekends so far this year.

"As more and more customers return to the skies, United is committed to delivering a superior customer experience on and off the plane, especially in increasingly crowded airports," said Aaron McMillan, United's managing director of hospitality and planning. "Our new Newark Club location is carefully designed with the customer at the forefront with thoughtful touches like murals and décor that reflect the local community. This design theme and commitment to creating a locally-inspired experience will set the precedent for future club openings and renovations across our network."

The Newark United Club location features a new design and reflects a modern take on the United Club experience. It showcases many firsts for the club, as well as existing premium offering, including the following:
  • The largest club in our network: The club features more than 480 seats across spaces for lounging, working, private dining and socializing.
  • Spa-like showers: Members can freshen-up in one of the six, spa-like shower suites at Newark, stocked with Sunday Riley products.
  • Coffee shop experience: Staffed by a barista ready to prepare their favorite hand-crafted drinks, flyers can get inspired at the full-service coffee bar, featuring illy signature blend of 100 percent Arabica beans, in addition to culinary offerings in all United Clubs, like complimentary beverages and snacks.
  • Modern, Newark-inspired design: Flyers can enjoy unmatched views of the Manhattan skyline amidst locally-sourced furniture pieces and décor, as well as the new design and color scheme that will be rolled-out in future new and refurbished clubs. The space also includes modern amenities, like self-scan entry for quick access and free, high-speed Wi-Fi.
  • Sustainable, green materials: As part of the airline's sustainability commitment, the Club is designed with sustainable materials and features, such as WaterSense-rated fixtures, enhanced indoor air quality, green cleaning and more.
Additionally, in collaboration with The Newark Museum of Art and Gallery Aferro, the new club location prominently features two murals created by local artists, Gilbert Hsiao and Dahlia Elsayed. Inspired by the musical legacy in the Newark area and United's iconic history, Hsiao's mural, located in the club's entryway, is a deceptively simple, eye-catching piece featuring dots and circles to represent abstract beats in space as well as nod to the United globe. Elsayed's artwork, situated in the club's lounge, is an abstract and textural piece, referencing Arshile Gorky's famous 1936-67 murals at EWR, with imagery inclusive of built and natural environments of the New York / New Jersey area.

"The Newark Museum of Art is honored to be a part of this remarkable tribute to our community and our city," said Linda Harrison, The Newark Museum of Art's director and CEO. "May these tremendous artworks inspire and remind our residents and visitors of Newark's role as a cultural hub for artistic excellence and community cultivation. We are so proud to contribute to this exciting unveiling and pay homage to our special city with these two extraordinary works of art."

"Artists like Gilbert Hsiao and Dahlia Elsayed have a gift, which is to make the world new for us over and over again," said Emma Wilcox, Gallery Aferro's co-founder. "Gallery Aferro is thrilled to see these acclaimed alumni of our residency and fellowship program gain a new global audience of travelers with this project."

The Newark United Club location is the first of a series of United Club locations to open with the new club design and amenities. It's part of United's ongoing commitment to renovate and introduce new United Club locations throughout its network and provide a more modern United brand experience. All the walkways are still there -- just returned from the EU and arrived at C and enjoyed the view of the new UC.. They used the "wasted" (a.k.a. employee lounge space) for the UC -- the walkways are still there and full width -- nothing has changed in that respect....

I just spent six hours here. It’s not bad at all and the staff is working hard to keep it clean.

Here since 2 PM (6 PM now). Too many guests for any pics. The cubbies for work areas are a bit too small as compared to some of the older 'phone booths'. There was a long line at the desk for entrance, but I just walked up to the scanner and got right in. I sat in one of the cubbies by the entrance and heard quite a few irate people re: not being allowed in. Not sure of the circumstances.

The staff has been working very hard throughout the day; all friendly.

Very impressed with the fresh food selection and the view of NYC.

Now I'll dislike the other UCs in the system!

checked out new lounge

I was surprised at how much of an upgrade the new lounge was compared to the old one...thankfully. Me wife, daughter, and I all walked in around 615pm on Wednesday for a couple hour break between flights. When the dust settled (or maybe I should say the lightning and thunder stopped a few hours after we were to depart) I was glad for the taco bar, freshly prepared sandwiches, cookies, and brownies. It was after 1am before we got our on-board dinner (was to be a 9pm departure).

We lucked out and found a place to sit not too far into the lounge. Close enough to hear the alarms others have complained about. Walking in via the automated gates was a bit of an issue for my wife, she and I each have our own accounts, but I put in that I had one guest and my daughter was able to scan in right after me.

Generally the place was clean with staff going around cleaning, both picking up used food service stuff along with disinfecting the place.

Only thing that stuck out as kind of odd was seeing a pilot in uniform in the lounge, looked like one of the United Express partner pilots. Also, several employees of contractors for united who work the ramp or something of that nature were parked along a whole row of seats. Was surprised that they were allowed in there, wouldn't they need to be traveling to get in there? Looked more like they were on a break taking up space that could be used by travelers. As for the pilot, I had to assume it wasn't a mainline pilot since that would likely violate their employment terms.

Maybe not accepting one-time passes or the usual summer vacation travelers who assume a First Class ticket gets admittance to the United's "First Class Lounge".

That's interesting...I thought UA did not allow any crew member in uniform to access lounges.

Guess that guy could have been a charter operator pilot. I'd think any aviation program would not want their pilots in uniform in a lounge where a bar is an integral component and booze are served gratis. Just not a good look.

As has been discussed, UA employees who can meet the standard entery requirements are allowed to use the UC but not in uniform. This has been confirmed by multiple employees. Someone in uniform was not a UA employee.

Be kind to the cleaning staff.
They really work extra hard in this place, which is a complete zoo in the afternoons.

I just visited the new Delta Sky Club at LGA and I must say that I was very impressed about the new lounge.
I think UC EWR C123 wins with the shower suites (DL does not have showers at the LGA Sky Club). I also like the breakfast sandwich offering.
However, overall, I like Delta Sky Club LGA more for its atmosphere.
If you would like to check the video, you can find the link in my signature.
Or, you can click my UC EWR C123 video link and you should be able to find it.
What do you think about these 2 brand new lounges?
Which one do you like more?

Visit #2 - upon landing in EWR at 9pm, one hour before the lounge closes.

While the lounge was about only 25% full, the buffet was mostly kept full. Also, I tried out the work booths - they are indeed tiny, and the floating desk has enough space for only your laptop and possibly 1 drink - definitely not enough room for any food if you need to use your laptop.

One of the Coke FreeStyle machines was down.

I havent been in person, but that was my take away from the pictures. Doesnt seem like any design reactions to covid, including visible/advertised air filters and air quality monitor screens.

The espresso machine was like that on May 20th, I just assumed it was never working.
