This us an archive thread, the active thread is General discussion of UA's inflight service (Domestic / International, all cabins)
previous thread: COVID Era UA inflight service changes

Thread is for general discussion of the state of UA in-flight service / catering, comparison to other carriers, past UA offerings and concerns with management decisions.

For a specific post about a recent in-flight food, use the appropriate Let's Eat .... thread.

The current Onboard Service descriptions by UA.com

Long-haul international premium cabin dining
North America, Caribbean and Latin America premium cabin dining
United Economy dining

Since the UA website is extremely vague, I'm looking for a few volunteers to submit data, and I will summarize to complete the wiki. kind regards, phkc070408

Have a few United flights upcoming and a bit confused.......All 3 of my flights have the same exact 3 options (burger, chicken orzo & polenta).... None of my routes are the exact same routing. So UA just has these 3 things on many different routes? Feel like their is way more variety with AA. Have no choice on 3 non stop legs I need as AA doesnt offer them, neither does DL.

Yes. Very common. I think convenience often trumps food. Would you inconvenience yourself because of the food choices?

I see your point and I'm sure you're right. To answer your question I inconvenience myself often for good food but for United's food Hec NO I am not

Yes, UA has not gone back to multiple mealsets across the domestic network yet. For what it's worth DL has some diversity, but it is still fairly slim compared to pre-pandemic.

I had the thai chicken a few weeks ago on EWR-LAX premium transcon, and sadly the rice noodles were so extremely overcooked that they weren't really even separate noodles, but just a soft rice paste...

I guess they didn't get rid of baby meals in the end!

Have we ever delved properly into why United's food in Polaris is so aweful?

It obviously can't just be financial reasons. I mean, cooking a fish well vs. over cooking it dry should not effect its cost, right? Or does it maybe, because of hiring lowest paid workers sans experience?
How much more per meal would United have to spend in order for it to become good? How much more $$$ for it to become great?
It's obviously multifaceted; the printing of menues, the insistence to continually instruct FAs to serve PDBs, plating, ingredients, care in the cooking process, wine selection, dessert tray vs. ice cream in paper cup, etc.

Just very curious how much United is really saving per Polaris meal by sloppily serving the slop?

(Oh, and does United still have their own kitchens?)

Appreciate you saying this! It's quite an indictment of how far the Polaris experience has dropped since it was first introduced. The airlines are recovering quickly. They can put some investment back into this product. if AA gets its act together, I suspect they can better compete and maybe force UA to do better but for now UA is getting away with this poor service because folks don't really have great choices especially to Asia.

I have fond memories of UA F and J service from the SIN based cabin crews. I know it was a long time ago. But they delivered some of the best in flight service I have ever experienced, regardless of airline.

I still make this at home from time to time.

Nice - thanks for posting - this was an automatic choice for me when it was offered.

Now my dilemma: make the meal and reminisce about how good the meals in Polaris were the first year or two, which will then only heighten the disappointment of today's Polaris cafeteria level rubbish.
