previous thread: COVID Era UA inflight service changes

Thread is for general discussion of the state of UA in-flight service / catering, comparison to other carriers, past UA offerings and concerns with management decisions.

For a specific post about a recent in-flight food, use the appropriate Let's Eat .... thread.

The current Onboard Service descriptions by UA.com

Long-haul international premium cabin dining
North America, Caribbean and Latin America premium cabin dining
United Economy dining

Since the UA website is extremely vague, I'm looking for a few volunteers to submit data, and I will summarize to complete the wiki. kind regards, phkc070408

Will only be practical for LH since they use T1. LX uses T5, and it's anyone's guess until the TTB comes back, so one really needs a lot of time to clear T1 security, walk to C, eat in the PL and then schlepp to T5 and re-clear security.

The reverse is when you lose out on Polaris Lounge. Arriving in LH or LX, and connecting to a United Flight.

Lol - hardly - after refusing to eat United’s awful Polaris food - here’s what I got on my LH connecting flight - butter was soft, bread was fresh and warmed, and the salmon appetizer was amazing - and beef was solid - UA should be embarrassed what they offer….

We all love to poke fun at the horrible catering at UA, but serious question: anyone hearing rumbling that they are looking to improve / change? As it is, I eat at the polaris lounge in ORD before I fly outbound and bring snacks on the plane for return just in case.

They are "piloting" some minor improvements on very limited routes. Think return of a printed menu OR separate desert service (with all pre-made items...no true sundae service).
They have also sent out recent surveys, but seem more focused on which candy bar is preferred versus a return to former service standards.

So the short answer is, no indication of real, meaningful return of service standards.

Seriously, what the heck is going on with United? Their catering standards are just SO far below even their own pathetic US competition, let alone international carriers.

Three-course meals, new options, printed menus, the elimination of casserole dishes are coming to all Polaris routes next month. Still not back to the pre-pandemic service, but it will be progress.

I will believe real improvements when I see them. For now, they remain absolute trash.

bold mine

i wasn’t aware of that little detail. The small portions will look odd on actual plates though

Honestly I think it looks much better, even if there is some "negative space" with the plating.

Of course in the grand scheme it's not the real improvement we're looking for.

A bit of a mismatch though as the link refers to ANA F, vs UA business.
Nevertheless, an awesome offering by NH!

So with the elimination of casserole dishes, does it mean they will revert to cooking in metal trays in the ovens and then the flight attendants will plate each entrée? I thought the casserole dishes came about in the first place because the FA's griped about all the extra work required due to elimination of a extra FA galley position. To that extent I really wish UA would release more details as to the improvements.

I totally agree with you. There is no reason this soft service restoral should be taking this long and in increments. I have been flying United for many years and have been Global Service for many years and I have never seen anything like this. I have also found there is no point in complaining. All you get is lip service. Ticket prices right now are unbelievably high. I am flying to Switzerland at the end of June and paid $10000 for Polaris. I am going through Chicago from LA. If you go through SFO, EWR or IAD they are even more outrageous. Even with the high price of fuel are you telling me that they cannot provide a decent meal for the price I am paying. As for the dessert improvement a pre prepared Sundae is nuts (no pun intended). I suspect, in the case of the Sundae, we will never see the Sundae cart back. This was a very popular feature that United management seems bent on destroying. They had already done a lot of that prior to the pandemic. When they first started serving the Sundae it was not only available on trans con flights and International. It was available on all coast to coast domestic flights. I am not a complainer by nature but this lacking soft service has gotten to me.

That's what you get for flying WN.
