This us an archive thread, the active thread is General discussion of UA's inflight service (Domestic / International, all cabins)
previous thread: COVID Era UA inflight service changes

Thread is for general discussion of the state of UA in-flight service / catering, comparison to other carriers, past UA offerings and concerns with management decisions.

For a specific post about a recent in-flight food, use the appropriate Let's Eat .... thread.

The current Onboard Service descriptions by UA.com

Long-haul international premium cabin dining
North America, Caribbean and Latin America premium cabin dining
United Economy dining

Since the UA website is extremely vague, I'm looking for a few volunteers to submit data, and I will summarize to complete the wiki. kind regards, phkc070408

AA has a very confusing strategy (if you can call it that). They have proper service on their premium transcontinental services, but the rest of the domestic service is pretty bad both in hard and soft product.

The A321T that operate the NYC-LAX/SFO/SNA routes do not have PE. However on the plus side, all those routes are CPU upgradeable whereas United on those routes isn't.

Agreed. As I said, the AA strategy isn't very coherent.

This line of discussion is getting way off in the weeds. Passengers have stated what their expectations are based on UA promotional materials, whether or not that creates a "contract" is well beyond the scope of this forum. Passengers have certain expectations which are or are not being met. While we can debate those expectations, we are not going to go down contract / legal theories path as this is not a legal forum or clinic and most flyers are not lawyers.

The topic of this thread is what has happened in inflight service in the past few years. What are your recent experiences? What are your expectation? What change positive or negative are happening today? Remember this forum exists to inform UA flyers what to expect when they fly. Not to debate legal theories.

Let's return to the FT purpose of "discussing how to optimize the use of miles, points and status for the enhancement of your travel experiences."

Some passengers might have an expectation, others might not care, but it is definitely not part of the bargained for exchange. If anyone doubts this, call United and say you will buy a ticket but only if they write drink service into the contract, and see what happens.
Contracts can be implied:

One reason I prefer to pay more for United over Spirit on the same route is because United promises a beverage service. I don't like the COVID era UA inflight service changes when it comes to shorter flights on United Express. It's a lie.

It's truly a sad development that after flying between BUR and SFO for literally 17 years on a very regular basis, a 326-mile flight, all of a sudden the flight is too short for beverages. The only thing that is changed is SkyWest FAs have become lazy. There is plenty of time...there has always been.

And I know we don't like to compare service on European and Asian carriers, but how about comparing within North America? I flew from YYZ-YUL last week in Air Canada business class, a flight of 316 miles. Not only did we get a choice of beverage, we also got this:

On a 316 mile flight! With a comfortable "real" business class seat. And seatback IFE. And Wi-Fi.

Despite my extreme loyalty to UA, when I buy a domestic premium ticket I buy JetBlue or Alaska. It's not because I'm a blogger or unusually fixated on food...it's because I appreciate a nice soft product. Kudos to Air Canada as well for realizing this.

Are spirits making an unofficial comeback on domestic economy flights? Had them on a 2:20 min flight to DEN.

And? The point is other airlines can be customer friendly on inflight services short-distance routes. Even for other US domestics of the distance range, at least beverages are offered. Not having anything is pretty crappy, to say the least.

Indeed, and in the context of this thread, this is a very recent development at UA, particularly among the regionals - this was not so before the pandemic.

Hey MatthewLAX have you heard anything so far from your insiders of United considering bringing back any specific elements in many of these markets where there痴 a direct US airline competitor? Or should I expect the same 3 options and a bad brownie on my BOM-EWR tonight? My chat with the EWR purser supervisor proved to be helpful in getting a rough trajectory, but still a limited view of what direction the service is going in for the long haul.

I saw some AA meal pics on DEL-JFK and boy while it didn稚 look like grade A quality meals, it was sure better than what UA is offering in this market for sure. And it looked like One would at least be full after eating a meal.

And - the comparison to foreign airlines in my opinion is silly.

Is it just impossible to compare things to other US airlines that fly the routes?

No US airline will ever change things domestically based on what foreign airlines do internationally - ever.

I guess you missed this part of my post (re-quoted below). Is your next response going to be no other domestic fly this specific route?

The whole mentality of "we'll offer the minimum, sometimes nothing, and see what we can get away with" is the operating model of most US domestics, including United.

It's always a moving of the goalposts.

Of course Southwest always manages a full drink service between BUR-SFO, but...

(waiting for latest excuse)

The bottom line is this: UA continues to use the pandemic as an excuse to provide reduced service onboard. It has become comical on UA's regional partners.

FA痴 proactively making announcements no service as the LAS-LAX leg would only be 44 minutes this morning.
