Purchased U & B fare on Itin, Not Upgrade Eligible.. (please consolidate!)
I've done some searches on Plus Points & Upgrade Eligibility and didn't see anything immediately on this topic so here's a new thread (mods please consolidate as appropriate)..
I purchased a 2 segment itin (via Chase portal if that makes any difference), seg 1 is U fare, seg 2 is B fare. It was the "lowest" fare available for that schedule (joining other travelers on a mileage award itin) and checked on UA.com before booking. For upgrade purposes, is that considered effectively a Basic Econ flight? I clicked on the upgrade option which indicates the flight is not eligible for upgrade. I'm not concerned on upgrading this one but wanted to understand for future bookings.. If I want to upgrade, using Points Plus, Miles or cash, do I need to buy a fare other than the lowest cost when available, such as a refundable ticket?
I haven't been flying much in the past 2 years and probably missed this as another change that I'll like... =) I'll probably start work travel again in the coming months... Thanks again in advance!

International, a remote possibility the U could be BE. U and B are high economy fare classes but UA can provide do some fairly high fare class.
Can you look up the fare basis on united.com --- find fare rules in you reservation and it will tell you the multiple character fares basis (3-8 aphlanumberic code)
Routing, fare basis, carriers, ... are needed
Purchases on UA,com are clearly marked as BE. Some OTAs are poor for this, some have an option to eliminate BE

What is the route? Certain routes are not eligible for complimentary upgrades.

Domestic> definitely not a BE fare (would be N)

Insufficient info to get a good answer

any non-BE published paid fare is upgradeable
