Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Always crosscheck with UA's Travel Notices , Coronavirus (COVID-19) travel waivers and information, www.united.com/coronavirus as the situation is dynamic

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

Change is here. Change fees are gone. We’re permanently getting rid of change fees for most Economy and premium cabin tickets for travel within the United States. This includes Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Learn more

For all other destinations, change fees are waived through December 31, 2020. See terms and conditions
We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

This policy change will automatically appear, but it may not be reflected everywhere right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.

I would probably be planning to push things back further, because I expect the travel restrictions to get worse before they get better... and they change every day, so while you might be fine when you leave, you could be spending your entire trip on the phone with UA, trying to change your next leg.
Unfortunately, pushing it back is not an option, optioif I cancel completely, I would end up eating more than $12K in sunk costs. So I'm doing the best I can.

We're cancelling Thailand in April (including UA partner award via TYO for return). May try Hawaii instead, depending on how this plays. It's a bad time to be leaving the country, too much uncertainty about governmental travel restrictions and don't want to get sick overseas. Plus cities will basically be shutting down worldwide.

From the proclamation:

Sec. 5. Effective Date. This proclamation is effective at 11:59 p.m. eastern daylight time on March 13, 2020. This proclamation does not apply to persons aboard a flight scheduled to arrive in the United States that departed prior to 11:59 p.m. eastern daylight time on March 13, 2020.

So, I guess anybody making it onto any TATL w/b UA flight from EU on FR 3/13, should still be good!
This would mean that most TATL EU e/b flights on TH 3/12 could still operate.

Apologies for not reading more of the 98 pages but just landed in CDG (US citizen) — has United said anything specific about WHAT flight reductions from Europe will be made?

*as I stand in line at United counter*

Happy weird dystopian birthday to me! 😂

‪United rep at CDG said that all flights back to the US starting Saturday are showing as cancelled.‬ All flights from London are fine. She advised a handful of people to go to London to get back to the US.

I changed my flight to tomorrow, just in case, but we’ll see what other options are...

I have travel planned from AMS to PBI in early April. Now that I won't be allowed to travel (EU citizen), will I get a complete refund or will I have to do with travel certificates?

They don’t seem to know anything yet as it’s so new. I’m guessing they’ll know more by tomorrow/this weekend...

Hmm, wonder when they’ll inform everyone with a flight from Europe on Saturday or Sunday about this?

I'm someone who has a Europe->US ticket but does not want to travel (employer has banned work travel).

I'm guessing most people in that situation will be able to get full refunds thanks to EU261, which seems to guarantee refunds? (My TATL hasn't been cancelled, but LH cancelled a connecting flight recently, so I'm probably already covered.)

2+ hour wait currently on the phone - need advise ASAP

I am stuck in the US and will need to reschedule my meetings to leave by the Friday deadline for EU flights that Trump has proposed.
Its a 2+ hour wait for calls to United to be answered.
I dont have 2 hours. Any advice? Are there any global call centers that are taking calls faster RIGHT NOW?

If I try to rebook online, it gives me an error. Asks me to call
If try to cancel online, it asks for a $125 fee for the Mileage Plus ticket (strangely, no option to waive the fee)
Hence the reason to call them...

Your profile says LHR, which is not (yet) part of the travel ban. What is your destination in Europe?

Best bet is to find a GS (I'm not one!) that calls it in for you.

If this is business, eat the $125 fee, change your flight, and then get a refund once you get back home. Getting home is priority #1 , and flights are probably going fast.

I doubt there is a waiver to Europe yet, so another option is to hope your flights get cancelled later on and book a 1-way (award?) trip out right now. I guess if you booked pre March 2, you're in luck and can just change.

I'd suggest just eating the fee and as long as they don't charge you any fare difference, submit a refund when things calm down a bit.

Hi not related to the recent Trump-Europe announcement, but I canceled a flight for March. I want to use the credit to book a new flight, but when I try to do it on the United website, it charges the change fee. Do I have to call in to use the credit from my canceled flight? Anyone tried booking flights with their canceled/changed flight credit? With the wait times of over 90 mins that I checked right now, I'd rather not, but if that's the only way to avoid the change fee.... thanks!
