Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

I suspect that you’re correct. While there is a statement that you can cancel the flight and use the credit when you’re ready to travel, I think it operates exactly the same way as a change would today, and because they’re amending the fares to prevent issuance of residual ETCs for fare differences, I think it’s essentially a “change once, to a flight that’s at least as expenses as the one that you picked, but you don’t necessarily have to know what your new target flight is when you make the change.

Reports talk about wya fewer people on board, so I suspect a consolidation of flights would be for less seats overall.
I suspect that you’re right. I suspect one small plane is more profitable than one large plane on most of the routes that are being consolidated.

I don’t think we have a test case on this yet. My personal opinion is that it shouldn’t qualify, but that the DOT guidance you’re talking about might mean that it qualifies anyway. It really depends upon how poorly the DOT worded the regulation.

I'll admit I feel a bit shifty trying to obtain a refund for a segment cancellation 2 months from now, as it doesn't seem like it's in the spirit of what the regulation was originally targeting. However, that alleged 2-to-25 hour switch is so unabashedly slimy that I hope I am successful in getting my cash back.

fatlasercat, I was able to speak with someone after about 1:10. I tried my best for a refund, but I was unsuccessful even after the woman I spoke with consulted her "help desk" twice.

She did offer me a future flight credit for the total amount I paid with change fees waived, though. I have to make a booking and apply the credit by February 2021, but travel can be for any time.

Maybe this was a mistake because we could see significant schedule disruption in the near future. It would've been nice to have that cash on hand, too. But...this is good enough for me, and I don't want to HUCA with long hold times. It may also get even harder to get concessions out of UA going forward.

.
Was it actually confirmed they won't give an ETC for fare difference if the new itinerary costs less? My reading was they didn't specify either way, which could certainly lead one to believe that, and perhaps I missed someone confirming it, but I hadn't seen that yet.

Presumably, the new itinerary doesn't need to be the same destination as the original, right (like most normal changes, where you cancel the flights, and the value remains to be used on any destination you want)?

UA has updated its fare rules to specifically say no cert for fare differential: RESIDUAL VALUE TO BE IGNORED ON NON-REFUNDABLE FARE TICKETS

If you look at the fares UA has currently published, they have “ignore residual” all over the place. That means what it sounds like: if there’s a residual value in the ticket after computing the new fare, ignore it (and thus UA keeps it).

Flights were booked months ago. Thanks. I won't waste my time calling in to try to get better award flights. I am not willing to pay just to save 2 hours time. My flights are on Air Canada and SAS metal, the flights I wanted to change to are UA metal. I might wait for a schedule change to one of the segments of the trip and maybe then I can change the routing. My trip is not until June 23, who knows what will happen by then. UA could be bankrupt. I can cancel the cruise I am taking up to 48 hours before the sailing and retain 100% of the cost as a future cruise credit.

Well, the new schedule seems to be loaded. If EWR-SFO is representative of what they've done transcon, it's an interesting story. The change is milder than I expected. Here is what I see:

1. EWR-SFO typically runs 14x per day.
2. In March, it will run 12x per day.
3. In April, it will drop to 11x per day.
4. In May, it goes back up to 14x per day.

They could have cut further. It's clear to me UA assumed a best-case outlook. Let's see how it goes.

BTW, I can't believe they didn't cut LHR-SFO from 2x to 1x in April. The flights leave less than 2 hours apart, and an NFL team could run a scrimmage on those birds given the current loads...

Another observation is PZ and PN are EVERYWHERE!!! For all the 1Ks who aren't expecting to re-qualify, if you're comfortable flying, you'll easily flush your PlusPoints this year!

... a lot of downgauges at first glance, though. SFO-LHR early has gone from 773 > 772 and late has gone from 772 > 789. Late FRA has gone from 773 > 772.

Thanks, it looks like they are trying to avoid refunds and cash outflow under any circumstances. I would be happy with a no fee change.

Sigh, IAD-BRU which is usually packed has gone 772 > 764 (no Polaris, boo) and lots of other routes downsized too. Oddly, IAD-ZRH is going from 763 > 763 high J config. Odd.

Had flights to SFO next week for me (1k) and wife (plat) on different reservations and was able to get both canceled with no change fee to rebook. We will see if they honor the agent’s “notes” re: no change fee in the record when I go to rebook us. I’m giving it a 50/50 shot.
