Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

This policy change will automatically appear, but it may not be reflected everywhere right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.

Very generous March Change Fee Waiver

Saw this on my United app in the morning, about booking a ticket without any change fees. I thought surely there would be a ton of exceptions that don't apply to me.

Then saw it posted on here: https://onemileatatime.com/united-ai...ge-fee-waiver/ That is super generous, even BE tickets! Well done United.

I'm interpreting this to mean if you book an award ticket as a non-1K, you can change it down the road with no change fee (though mileage difference could apply).

If so that's a great addition -- we are considering a Hawaii trip but waiting to see how things settle but availability is good at the moment so this type of change fee waiver would make booking it now attractive since we could cancel (or change to a different award ticket) down the line without the usual penalty I pay as a Silver

Would love to know how this works in regard to award bookings, i.e. do they only allow your to "change" along the same route or can you rebook something different. For example if I book EWR-MIA and decide not to go, is it a simple redeposit of miles (i.e. like Southwest)? Or would I have to "change" it to another flight/date on the same route.
If they are going the SW method his would be amazing to book potential flights with zero risk if you have lots of UA miles

I doubt that you can change destination. The change of flights under normal waivers requires the same departure-destination city pair.

So what we don't know yet is if this would be a good strategy for booking a summer fight to... wherever. France, in my case. Could you book a fare now and, if fares drop, rebook at the new lower price and retain the difference as a credit? If I were United, this would be a neat trick to tie up customer $$$ almost like a prepaid travel program.
Although this isn't in the fare rules for international fares, it seems they've now updated domestic fare rules to reference this waiver. Does the bolded text mean they will not issue an ETC for a residual in case of a change to a lower fare?

Yes, and it doesn't need to be the same day. I don't know if the app/website will let you do it though.

Yes. Hard to fault them for that. The purpose here is to allow passengers flexibility, not arbitrage fares.

I have to go to Boston in June. I've been eyeing LAX-BOS inventory for the date I want to fly, but hadn't booked yet because I'm not 100% sure that the event won't cancel. On Monday, the outbound was C3. On Tuesday (after the waiver was announced), it was C0 and the fare had shot up by about $1K. This morning, it's C4, and the fare was reduced by about $800. The return has been holding steady with C inventory, but no P, Z or even D inventory.

I'm going to keep monitoring it, in the hopes that UA will open up some cheaper F classes -- which point I will pounce.

Thumbs up Generous in issuing exemptions

Just want to share information that some here may find useful. We had booked a vacation to Switzerland for April. This reservation was made in January prior to Coronavirus fears. Two tickets were Basic economy and two were award tickets. Even though, there is no waiver for Switzerland, I still called them to ask for options. Since this is related to coronavirus, they issued me an exemption and were able to cancel all tickets and issue a credit to our accounts for one year. For the award tickets, a rebooking fee of $125 per ticket will apply at the time of rebooking. For basic economy tickets, full credit will be applied toward fare of new tickets.

I think it was generous of them to issue a credit even though there is no waiver for Switzerland at this time.
