Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus Premier members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through Uniteds award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

Were extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

Thank you all.

I also took a look at AC which is flying to HKG so maybe it has to be HKG to Vancouver YVR and then into the USA. Apparently AC does a tech stop in ICN each way to avoid having crew stuck in HK.

With tech workers still at home, and some of the biggest wall street firms embracing work-from-home earlier today, BOS traffic is mostly college kids. To them, 737 seats are better than plastic classroom chairs, and the power outlets keep Spotify on for hours.

What in the world is going on with Canada schedules? My IAH-YEG in April was canceled yesterday and they are not showing the direct flight again until the following week. I was under the impression that travel to CA was strong now that most restrictions have been lifted.

Restrictions keep changing, especially recently with the Omnicron outbreak. Have you seen the ON numbers recently....<400 a day when I was last in YYZ in Oct, and they were at 2200 yesterday. Canada now highly discouraging travel with their own citizens...they just reinstated travel testing requirement for those away for <72 hours, and now not only require a test, but require one from outside Canada (ie, can't use the same test to leave and come back). They don't want to 'ban' non-essential travel, but are actively discouraging it.

That said, the Canada schedules that I've seen (and I'll admit...YYZ is where I typically go, so that's what I've been watching more closely) have always been changing. An example, DEN-YYZ was supposed to start after Labor Day, but then was delayed and now starts Feb. 11 (it did run for about a week after Labor Day, but then stopped...I suspect when they pulled it is was too late to cancel those first week or so of flights). Was also going to be mainline, 2X/day, but now scheduled as UAX for the first while at once per day (and I suspect the part that goes to 2x mainline - I think in April or May - is placeholder at the moment anyway). That one flight is also 9am, so west coast connections to it are a bit tough (even out of SFO/SJC, to connect on it, you need to leave on the ~5:30am departure). SFO-YYZ has constantly been pulled back...was slated to start after Thanksgiving, then Dec. 16, then Feb. 11, and last I saw, it was on the schedule starting March 24, initially back to the 2x per day, but now showing 1x, with the eastbound being redeye only. I am looking forward to it, honestly, as its the easiest way back (and I really try to avoid AC if possible).

AC has also been doing similar with their schedules. All I can say is things are going to be changing for a while....I'd guess until the end of 2022, at minimum. I sure hope it is sooner, but if we've learned anything over the past year and a half, its that the virus is not stagnant, and after every outbreak recedes, many predict we'll start going to normal, but then a new outbreak and/or variant occurs and the course changes.

UA has typically flown at least 1 RT on a 777, but that can always change. Its typically been an early morning departure out of SFO (like ~7am), and I think its been mid-afternoon out of ORD. I think theyre starting to firm up the Feb. schedule now, but I dont think March yet, so theres still definitely a possibility for that to change. Also, even that type of 777 can change - definitely no specific confirmation, but I saw a domestic 777 map loaded on a flight on a different route in March or April - those are the PW 777s that are currently out of service - and again, that farther out so very possible its placeholder and will change - but perhaps they are planning to have those in service again? Those domestic 777s are lie flat, but are 2-4-2 in F.

i dont recall a 757 with lie flats typically flying SFO-ORD and vv. Theyve definitely had 753s ply the hub-to-hubs sometimes, including SFO-ORD, but those fly solely domestic and are definitely not lie flat, but typical domestic recliners in F. Also, Ive never flown on that aircraft personally, but you mention widebody schedule and then talk 757 - and 757 is definitely not widebody.

Hard to say this far out but as posted above, they usually do have at least one widebody going. The 757-300's I see on the schedule are not lie-flats. But they do have one 787 and one 777 per day (I checked March 7 and 11 as an example).

Yeah I misspoke because AA only has lie-flats on widebodies. I'm ok with any plane if it's lie flat. I was under the impression that all of UA's 757s had lie flat seats, but looks like it's only the 752. I guess I will try to get the 777 flight which looks like it's still on the schedule as of now; my schedule is pretty flexible.

March updating again tonight.

Rather miffed, when the first update was loaded 2 weeks ago, went from a CRJ-200 placeholder to a-550. Booked 4 segments in paid F earlier this week. Just like that, back to a CRJs. Now have to deal with refunds, and travel credits applied need to be reissued. It’s like why bother putting them out there for a hot minute? I feel baited and switched upon.

Yep, some February TATL changes loaded earlier today. The second daily SFO-FRA (926/927), ORD-FRA (944/945), and IAD-FRA (932/933) have all been axed, as have EWR-MUC and SFO-CDG and perhaps others. The remaining SFO-FRA (58/59) has been downgauged from a 77W to a (Polarized) 789.

No doubt this has to be because of the omicron and covid situation there? I was in Munich for work last week (ironically flew in on ewr-muc) and they said this would probably be the last in-person meeting out there until omicron settles down as its currently exploding in Bavaria.

Hmm, those TATL flights must have been changed recently?

And that's just for the month of Feb?

Presumably they will change back by the summer?
