Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

This policy change will automatically appear, but it may not be reflected everywhere right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.

I’m booked on SFO-CDG UA990/984 in May but I consider it speculative at this time

mid April schedule changes are loading. So far nothing terrifying I am seeing, but more domestic reductions from the previously posted schedule.

Seeing changes to flights I've booked as early as early February and as late as early July - nothing too terrifying as you've said but flights are being cut

UA HKG not flying through Q12022?

Hi UA FT

Just was looking at schedules. Has UA stopped flying to HKG? Cursory look I can only find NH HKG - NRT and then NRT - USA on UA or (CX) HKG - ICN and then (UA) ICN - SFO and lastly (LH) HKG - FRA and then (UA) FRA - USA

Thanks

HKG is indefinitely suspended due to low demand. It may show up in placeholder schedules (which I believe are in place for TPAC beyond February/March), but I would expect flights to remain suspended until HKG opens it borders and relaxes its inbound quarantine requirements.

I guess BOS-SFO going all 737 is no longer "terrifying"? Or do you just not have one of those flights booked in April?

There is substantial pent-up demand for HKG provided quarantine is relaxed for fully vaccinated (3 shot MRNA, or mixed booster MRNA + 2 shot non-MRNA vaccine) for passengers. Instead HKG govt is following China mainland policy of zero-Covid, with very restrictive 21-day quarantine & possibly longer (e.g. if someone on your flight test positive anytime during quarantine, all passengers are required for additional quarantine time). This affects UA flight crew & schedule by reducing willingness to fly nonstop route to avoid quarantine policy, such that UA crew can bypass most of restrictive quarantine effects by flying into intermediate stopover point such as ICN (or GUAM previously) and immediately fly out, but all passengers terminating in HKG still subject to 21+ days quarantine.

This has also devastated Cathay Pacific (HKG home airline) crew morale & forced many to quit the airline because of psychological stress from long quarantines. The seemingly only way for airlines to protest HKG quarantine policy is to reduce flight schedule into HKG to somehow force behavior change. But it’s not likely effective because HKG is following China mainland zero Covid19 policy for political purposes, and likely to continue until mid 2022 or even later.

Great news! This is my favorite TATL Eastbound from the Westcoast and on a B772 (avoiding potential 789 Fauxlaris) to boot; now just hoping the PL lounge will be open as well.

They haven't flown to HKG since January of 2020. And as the posters above said, don't expect HKG flights to resume until quarantine rules are relaxed, and that is still many months (if not a year or longer...) away.

I personally have HKG itins booked way back in 2019 that still have not been flown. And I'm pretty sure at some point UA's rebooking window will expire before HKG reopens.

Just noting SFO-YYZ still planned for late March, but only 1 nonstop showing now, vs. the two that were showing until I think last week. Unfortunately, the eastbound flight they kept was the redeye. Yuck.

I posted this in the HKG forum, but the HK government aims to reopen to the rest of the world by around summer 2022.

They flew one round-trip SFO-HKG-SIN-HKG-SFO in July 2020. And then it was canceled again.
