Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good

The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

This policy change will automatically appear, but it may not be reflected everywhere right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.

In the second half of September, the 7pm LAX-HNL and 8am HNL-LAX were cancelled. Both have resumed this month (restoring LAX-HNL to 4x daily), only for a slightly different adjustment/reduction to take place in November.

Looks like some adjustments to Canada, at least YYZ, since the last time I looked.

SFO-YYZ on UA metal now scheduled to start on March 27, 2022 - last time I checked, it was going to start Jan. 4, but earlier, it was showing mid-December start and before that, was in mid-November. Wonder if this route will ever be back (at least, next year). Meanwhile, DEN-YYZ seems to start again on Feb. 11, unchanged from last time I checked, but delayed as it was supposed to start again in Sept (it actually did run for a week or two just after Labor Day, but stopped...I guess the change was too close to cancel the initial first few flights, but at least the ones I saw looked pretty full with pax, so there was demand (I realize whether it was profitable enough demand is a completely other question)).

Meanwhile, would love to see SJC-ORD start again, it was at one point set for Oct. 31, but looks like that is now also March 27 start. I realize there is lots of SFO-ORD flights, but SJC is just a whole lot more convenient for me being on the east bay, and a much easier of an airport to go through (even if there's no Centurion lounge, or UC for that matter).

YOW/IAD is set to resume daily on November 1st. Can any insiders confirm if this will actually go ahead or is it likely to be delayed?

Not an insider but once you get inside 4-6 weeks of travel, the schedule is reasonably firm -- subject to any outside disruptions (changes in governmental rules).

things are only getting better from this perspective. Unlikely to affect air travel per say, but US announced a very short time ago they will be opening the Mexico/Canada land border to fully vaxed travelers in November. Its going the right way (at least for now).

That is indeed a positive development, but IMHO it has little impact on the viability of YOW-IAD air service.

Any thoughts on when IAD-GVA will be back? I have a booking in January and have watched them push back the resumption of this route every few months. Currently on the schedule beginning on Dec. 11, but at what point can I have some confidence this date will stick?

With the last schedule cut it looks like they also changed the aircraft type on the route to a "high-J" 767 and pushed my return flight time back by about a hour (good sign?).

given GVA is coming back to LX big time I think UA will get back to GVA as well as planned

agreed, which is why I lead with unlikely to change air travel, per say. I’m a bit disappointed myself in the continual delays to a lot of the Canada routes, with the routes I posted above (DEN/SFO-YYZ) still being pushed back. You’d think they’d want to get these routes going again, but on the other hand, I do guess if there’s a choice, and the demand still isn’t quite there, maybe they’d rather ramp up the shorter flights from ORD and EWR to YYZ, which are easy connections from DEN/SFO, vs starting the longer routes. Or pushing to AC-operated non-stops. I also guess at least SFO-YYZ is probably primarily business, so maybe they need that traffic to build up first.

ZRH and GVA were already planned for all 76L service pre-Covid from EWR, IAD and ORD. The ORD-ZRH launch end of March 2020 never materialized for obvious reasons.
Seasonal SFO-ZRH 788/789 service was dropped in 2020 as well and has yet to be reintroduced.

Just got minor schedule change for SFO-OGG and vv. in early-mid November. SFO-OGG now leaving 10 minutes earlier (which brings it back to the original time it was when I booked it, before the 10 minute later change to where it was until yesterday), and OGG-SFO now leaving 40 minutes later. Guess the aircraft is going to have a bit more ground time scheduled? Nothing else changed.

Of note, I found this out because I got emails for each of the 4 PNRs we have booked (long story...booked one-ways, with 2 on each). No schedule change notation on app or website.

Who knows? I imagine they'd be trying to beef up YYZ/YVR, ie, the prime Canada destinations, at least at the same time if not first. But as I mentioned a few posts up, even routes there, aside from the shortest flights (ie, ORD/EWR/IAD, and even EWR may be most about slots) keep getting delayed. Some until end of March 2022. Have you checked on/after March 27 (I just ask since that's when SFO-YYZ is currently slated to restart on UA metal).

Alberta is also in bad shape in terms of COVID, so that probably is a factor, as well.
