Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

This policy change will automatically appear, but it may not be reflected everywhere right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.

ARGH UA once again pushed back the resumption of the SFO-ATL nonstop

It was Aug 1, and it's now Sept 8

UA has been pushing this back by a month at a time since Dec 2020!

To my surprise and delight, I see United is selling direct nonstop DEN-SJO (UA246 on Saturdays) and SJO-DEN (UA1087 on Sundays) flights later this year, at least in October and December.

I know anything more than about 3 weeks out is a placeholder, more or less. Could anybody share some educated speculation on the likelihood that they will actually run these nonstop flights, instead of changing to a DEN-IAH-SJO as the time gets closer?

I have MP reward tix in F for a LFT - IAH - SFO - SBP r/t in August. Checking UA.com, all of my flights have now been cancelled. The problem appears to be the San Francisco - San Luis Obispo segments on UA Express/SkyWest as the sched only lists one roundtrip SFO - SBP flight a day in August. I've looked at rerouting via LAX....but UA Express has cancelled all service between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo on my August travel dates. It now appears I will have to overnight at SFO on both the inbound and outbound travel dates if I want to travel/to from San Luis Obispo. Any advice?

Might not work for you, but what about flying to SBA instead?

Looks like there are some not-terrible itineraries for LFT-SBA in one day.

Well, that's not a bad idea. However, my actual destination is located over an hour by car north of San Luis Obispo up the coast so I'd much rather fly into SBP. I also wonder if UA will allow me to change my destination to SBA from SBP as I'm using miles for this trip.

You'll have to call of course, but it should be easily allowable noting the forced overnight to get to SBP. If an agent says no, just try calling again to get a different one. Find the itinerary you want on google or united, and then feed the agent those flights.

Fresno FAT might be another option, if where you're going isn't along highway 1 (distance wise probably doesn't make sense if it is).

Also consider MRY (Monterry), a little further than SBA -- but a car will be needed for either. Going from one out station to another will have limited options

There other option is going to SFO or LAX and then driving -- more options, longer drive.

UA will generally allow you to move your flight's endpoint by 100 miles due to a schedule change. SBA is within that range, and so it shouldn't be a problem.

Since you're going north, though, I might suggest MRY. It's a little beyond 100 miles, but I think it's the next closest UA airport to your destination, so you might get an agent to take pity on you.

Great information and thanks! And my final destination is located on CA highway 1.

Ah, I was also thinking SJC but MRY would be closer as my actual destination is on CA highway 1 (and I believe CA 1 is now back open in Big Sur following its closure awhile back due to a landslide). Thanks!

In that case might also be worth checking out MRY as WineCountryUA and jsloan suggested above. The schedule connectivity is decent there too. Personally I would not worry about the 100mi threshold — just pick whatever suits you better — but good to be aware of it in any case.

Good luck with the arrangements.

EWR-GSO

I'm continuing to have issues with one route (EWR-GSO) that I've been flying for years and that always seemed to have decent loads. For months, UA has been loading nonstops (E550) then replacing them with a EWR-IAD-GSO 73x/CR200 combo. Now I had an early September trip canceled and switched to a connection. It can add a day to the trip if I need to go in the night before. Currently looks like non-stops are not back until after September 8th. Anyone have any insight into what's really happening? Is UA just trying to funnel more traffic through IAD? EWR-ORD-GSO is possible but not at the offered times. EWR-RDU/CLT-rental car takes about as much total time.

no, but I wish they would bring SFO-CVG back. Doubt it will happen - it got canceled before even the pandemic (last flight was Jan. ‘19, I think), and for the year or so prior, departures out of CVG changed a few times, as if they couldn’t optimize it. That flight worked for us, especially the eastbound when it wasn’t a red eye.

Seems like they're doing a bit more tweaking of August first half.

I suppose a certain someone will let us know if he has any flights in August.
