Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good

The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

They do, but not as frequently as you would like. For example, I found out that there was a seven-day self-quarantine period for Brazil, but the site did not update it.
Remember that USA is now "virus export" country. Before, it was "virus import" country. So, there are more restrictions from other countries.

United Airlines Further Reduces Domestic and International Schedules
March 17, 2020

CHICAGO, March 17, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- United continues to aggressively manage the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak on our employees, our customers and our business. Due to a continued drop in travel demand as a result of this outbreak and government mandates or restrictions in place prohibiting travel, the airline today announced a 60 percent schedule reduction in April - this includes a 42 percent reduction across the U.S. and Canada and an 85 percent decrease in international flights.

International

Across the Atlantic, Pacific and Latin America, United will operate approximately 45 daily flights in April.

Domestic

While United does not plan to suspend service to any single U.S. city now - with the exception of Mammoth Lakes, CA - the airline is closely monitoring demand as well as changes in state and local curfews and government restrictions across the U.S. and will adjust its schedule accordingly throughout the month.

I have been following this since it was announced as I’m scheduled to fly it March 25. When they announced IAH-LHR was going after March 16, it was only actually cancelled today and tomorrow. You could still book all other dates in March.

overnight last night, they cancelled through Monday. From next Tuesday on it is still
able to be booked. I think they are going to cancel in waves. I’m waiting for the cancellation to post before I call in.

Should I be expecting a refund if it is cancelled? I also have upgrade with copay and miles- will that be fully refunded? Thanks!

It looks like the approach for UA is to serve each INTL market predominately from one hub: Europe from EWR; Asia from SFO; Latin America from IAH. There are some minor exceptions, obviously.

Based on the expected demand, even into April, not a bad plan. This would be inconvenience for passengers, but better than having some kind of multiple stop service than nothing at all.

Delta is grounding 300 widebodies, and AA has 3 long haul routes left. Don't expect back to normalcy anytime soon, expect maybe Cancun

There has to be an involuntary reduction in force coming. Incredibly deep cut.

Expect to be re-routed through another city. They will try to keep from giving you a refund if they can. There are several reports of people asking successfully for one, and other reports of having the refund denied.

Copay + miles upgrade will likely be carried over to the new flight. If you are able to get your flight refunded, the miles + copay would be refunded also.

I think United's strategy is to cancel slowly because they don't want a lot of cash refund requests. What they want is for travelers to go online and cancel themselves and take a flight credit, because United needs those cash reserves and doesn't want to pay them out in refunds.

Seems that way. After watching empty flights [from SFO-Europe] go out for weeks now, I was wondering why they wouldn't funnel all of Europe through EWR and all Pacific through SFO..

The IAH-SYD flight seems long gone...They must be placing those through SFO/LAX. Even that seems like they have to consolidate the Aussie flights through one hub on the west coast. This is so bad we are watching UA downsize in real time day by day.
