Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

Same here, I was booked on UA’s inaugural EWR-OPO at the end of this month. Have not received any e mail or notifications from United, but today randomly went to check seat assignments and found the following messages 1- your seats are waitlisted, 2-A schedule change has occurred- Review & accept changes (but unable to do so as the next msg states a modification has been made and can only be done by directly contacting United 3- Your reservation has not been ticketed, contact UA immediately.
I’ve been on hold for over an hour. I know my flights been cancelled (duh!) and would like to get a refund, or worse case UA credit, but find the website is not allowing me to do so. Do I just wait on permahold?
PS if I try to just open the reservation to cancel or change, I’m advised that I will be subject to a cancellation penalty. Tried the HKG 001 800 5555 8000 # doesn’t seem to be working?? Is there another # to try?

In the past, I’ve been able to use it (as horrible as the search is when using it), but not now.

was supposed to do CVG-ORD-SAT yesterday, return on Monday. The ‘change flights’ link gave me a message to call UA, but cancel worked. So I did that on Thursday.

now that the flights themselves were canceled, the ‘use future flight credit’ link doesn’t even get me to the search flights page - still a message to call

Preparing for my trip to PUJ next week to be even more difficult - as it has a lap infant ticket on it. Same deal on the website, where change flights gives me the call message, I haven’t completed the cancelation yet, but I can get to the page where it shows the flights and the amount of the credit, but I haven’t competed the final step to finalize the cancel. I have a feeling at this point, that may not work either. But let’s see. Keeping that until closer to - hoping at this point there’s a cancelation one way or another so I can attempt a full refund. As I’m told, rebooking this is going to be a PITA as the lap infant is almost certainly going to turn 2 before we re-use the finds. I’m told the infant ticket is going to need to be refunded, and that a new ticket for her is going to need to be purchased (fine) on a separate PNR (not fine).

Re: SFO-CDG on one PNR & CDG-SFO on 2nd PNR

Been on hold to UA for an hour. No email, etc from United, but my original SFO-CDG UA990 has disappeared from the schedule, and when I attempted to change
the missing CDG-EWR-SFO return first w/no LH legs and no UA metal at all, the CDG-YYZ-SFO wanted a $4300 upfare payment from my original P Fare.
Any suggestions from anyone?? Immediately put an AA itin in premium eonomy on hold for the return itin, but couldn't find anything for the outbound flight on Tuesday.

Good move. Should probably add Canada and Australia too honestly...

It'll be a rough few weeks/months, but we will get thru this hopefully.

I was scheduled to fly FRA-ORD on 3/23 but now UA has re-routed me on FRA-IAD. It also seems that my outbound EWR-VIE on OS has been removed from the schedule but no notification from UA yet. I haven't accepted the FRA-IAD change yet. Although I won't be traveling I am waiting to see what happens with the outbound flight on Thursday before cancelling to see if I can get a refund. I am definitely covered by the no change waiver though.

I do think NYC and Seattle (and maybe Spokane) airports will be banned soon, yes. Look at the scenes of NYC last night. People acting like nothing is happening. I think EWR, JFK, LGA, ISP, SEA, GEG, and any other NYC/Seattle major airport could be closed/banned.

Honestly, my #1 suggestion is to scrap the trip, because I have no faith at all in the government not to decide that they can refuse entry to US citizens and permanent residents. Furthermore, what are you planning to do when you get there? France is being shut down along the lines of Italy.

That said, if you feel you need to go, you're doing the right thing by waiting on hold and asking for a re-route.

I see no reason to go to Europe right now. It's basically shut down. And who knows, maybe you'll be forced to quarantine in an unpleasant place for 2-3 weeks. Not what you want.

I wouldn't personally worry about US citizens being denied entry to their own country.

President Trump was asked about domestic travel by a reporter in this morning’s news conference. He basically said it’s something being discussed but didn’t give any hint of specifics.

My understanding is that US citizens cannot be refused entry.

I can somewhat imagine a mandatory quarantine being enacted, although at this point I can't see that it would be any use. Commentary on quarantines aside, legally I suppose the question of refusing entry / admissibility could be different for permanent residents, although so far that doesn't seem to have been tested.

Anyway, that is a tangent; I also would not recommend a trip to France any time soon.

Except that there's a greater than zero chance that you may be spending a few weeks in a quarantine facility on your return, ala the cruise passengers.

Absolutely, but that's not really "banned from entering" in the sense was OP was talking about.

So I guess all these brand-new retrofitted 763s are going to be parked for now? Talk about a capex sink that UA is not going to be able to monetize for who knows how long...
