Note that I included UGs to P+ in my UG percentage, for Polaris, my UG rate is lower. I too, find it unacceptable, but I'm also a bit a of gambler.

My international route procedure is as follows:

1. Buy the cheapest upgradeable UA fare and apply PPs.
2. Buy back-up tix in award J (or refundable J) on another carrier.
3. If my OB OTW segment doesn't clear into J (not P+) cancel for FFC and fly the back-up.
4. If my OB OTW segment clears, fly it and then, I'm stuck with the return segment. This is how I'm ending up in P+ and Y sometimes.

Everybody here seems to think that UG rates will improve with the higher 1K/GS qualification thresholds so, while I'm very skeptical, that is why I'm still willing to gamble in the UA casino.

IAD-SJU today....
Pretty pricey for WFBF, but a lot did apparently.
I snagged the ONLY CPU available. There were 3 2 days ago....

Yeah, that is one seriously overbroad "everybody."

Just to be crystal clear: Upgrades keep getting harder because UA sells the seats rather than making them available for advance upgrades. Nothing's going to change just because the requirements for status keep increasing. We have literally a decade of proof.

Yup. People are paying. I was on a Y fare for my IAD-SJU and the paid upgrade was $500.
We were a few minutes late boarding and I had to ASK the GA if she had run the upgrades (knowing there was just one open seat and I was #1)...
They were definitely holding out, but as I mentioned, we were at J1 for the final 48 hours.

What higher thresholds? The CC send eligibility for PQP only just made for more 1Ks. The threshold is lower than those announced pre-COVID that were scaled back to the current PQP amounts.

Agree on strategy for obtaining upgrades and Agree that upgrade will likely not clear.

WFBF gets truer every day. The upgrade $ buy ups are just too attractive, except when they are not.

Completely agree and I just cannot fathom why people are unable to grasp this reality. But, I guess in the face of a decade of proof, it's much more fun to engage in magical thinking...

Its more like - if only they could raise the requirements high enough (but as long as it's not higher than my work spends on my tickets) - there will be more upgrades for me!.... magical thinking indeed.

Are you waiting until closer to your flight date to apply PPs so that you can monitor changes in the buy-up offers?
I always apply PPs at booking and don't monitor the buy-up prices until within a week of my travel. I'm wondering if it might be better to not apply PPs until the last week before travel, so that I can see any good buy-up offers that pop up.

Since UA rarely releases PZ (even PN is less and less frequent), I would not rush to apply PP.

This way, I can monitor buy-up offers.

It is always interesting to watch the offers changing, and to hedge my upgrade odds, before deciding to apply PP.

Not following.... Do PPs affect the buy up offers? I always have buy up offers even when PPs are applied. They only go away sometimes at T-48 (I believe). Does having PPs applied affect the buy up amount?

The risk is that they open up PZ and upgrade people in the interim and you miss out on it. I've been upgraded randomly multiple times with PZ never showing before or after. Unless you can guarantee nobody is waitlisted, you could be missing out.

My usual strategy is to apply PP at booking then watch the buckets. If F looks wide open, as soon as I can see the waitlist on the app (a few days before the flight), I remove and reapply the PP, to see what effect it has on my place on the list. If F is wide open and I'd be at the top of the list without PP, then remove them. No sense in spending PP when I'd get the CPU anyway. But if there's any chance this might not happen, I leave the PP applied.

IME, domestic upgrades before T-48 are very, very rare, even if F is empty.

+1

This is what I do all the time :-)

But, it could back fire too. People change plans all the time. No.3 on the WL with 3 days to go and 7 F seats open may not get you CPU.

UA is making very attractive offers to upgrade e.g. $167 IAD-CUN and trying to extract every dollar :-)
