I suspect they might. But the point of making them available closer to purchase, then, would be to entice customers, or to build loyal customers, who will buy a seat on the flight in the first place, rather than on another airline where F/J might be cheaper, or upgrades available at booking. That is why all my international travel has been on other carriers this year. While UA flights are full, they don't need my business. Or provide a better soft product. If that changes, then they will have to compete in more areas than just route.

Either a mistake or an in-op seat. They’re not leaving a seat empty up-front on LAX-IAD intentionally without a reason.

my sub-2 hour LAS-SFO flight yesterday:
8th on the UG list, at boarding then announced 6 GS and 31 1K

...I went on to OGG and died at #1... I had the entire exit row to myself and was planning on lying down to sleep until someone moved up to the aisle at take-off......the FA's seem to know him.....overall was a good flight

11/18: BOS-IAD-RDU Q Fare: PP cleared for both flights in advance
11/28 MSP-ORD-RDU H Fare: PP cleared for both flights in advance. MSP-ORD I'd have gotten as a CPU but ORD-RDU might have gone either way
11/30 ORD-RDU T Fare: PP Cleared in advance though I cancelled the trip
11/30 RDU-DEN U Fare. Currently #1 for 1 seat using PP. We'll see
12/13 RDU-IAH-LAX L Fare. Cleared at booking (yesterday) for RDU-IAH with PP.
I got the RDU-DEN upgrade at the gate, I was the only one to get upgraded. That felt good.

Are Plus Points even worth it? I could not use once in 2022

I have attempted to use on every flight and hardly seem worth the effort

Welcome to FlyerTalk!

I used all of my PlusPoints in 2022, and fully expect to use them in 2023. So, yes, they're worth it to me -- but that's because I adapt my travel plans to match upgrade space. If you simply try to keep your usual flying patterns and then hope for upgrades, they're hit-or-miss. And if you're flying a bunch of GS-heavy routes, they're mostly miss.

Doesn't work that way in attempting on every flight. Needs more thought, calculation and planning.

I have been able to clear on 3 TATL segments for 2 in 2022, so that was of value to me. I will have 50 PP expire since I have no more trips after this week and as Plat I'll only have 40 PP after 2/1/2023, meaning I won't be planning more trips with PP in mind.

I applied +Ps on two NH flights (UA ticket but native NH flight number after ticketing) and both seem to have cleared. It shows Premium Plus on the UA web site but business cabin on the ANA site, with business class seats selected. So, they are valuable to me.

- FRA-EWR R Fare: PP cleared two weeks in advance
- EWR-RDU B Fare: Instant Upgrade cleared at booking

My wife and I (both of us earned 1K) have been able to use a little over half of ours so far. 2 TATL, 2 TCTL, 7 gift upgrades to family and a handful of domestic upgrades.

OGG-DEN redeye.... died at #3 on the list.....

Plan B: 53D..... last row, all 4 seats to myself to "lay flat" and sleep the entire flight
...passed on dinner, drinks, movie

... a hidden 1K perk..... be nice to the Gate Agents and they might not put anyone in your row if you ask nicely.....

CLT-IAH this week on a 738. 1K on PP off my L fare and I died at #5. That was surprising. Especially as I had no trouble clearing on IAH-LAX which struck me as much more likely to be the elite heavy route.

It's been a good year for PlusPoints usage between my partner and I (both 1K). The value is definitely on the international side.

Domestic (admittedly mostly short flights):
  • SFO-LAX-MCO (20)
  • MCO-DEN-MCO (40)
  • ORD-ATL (20)
  • MCI-IAD-ATL (20)
  • ATL-IAH-ATL (40)
  • BOS-ORD (20)
  • ORD-MCO (20)

INTL:
  • SFO-SYD (30)
  • SYD-LAX (30)
  • IAH-SYD (30)
  • EWR-LHR x2 (60)
  • LHR-EWR (30)
  • LHR-IAD (30)
  • SYD-IAH (30)

Friends (with no status):
  • SYD-SFO (30)
  • LAX-SYD (30)
  • MCO-DEN x2 (40)
  • EWR-MCO (20)
  • MCO-SFO (20)

Also some failures:
  • MCO-DEN
  • EGE-EWR
  • LAX-MCO x2
  • ATL-SFO
  • Friend on MCO-LAX
  • Friend on LAX-HND ANA J to F
