I think it is optimistic of UA if they actually added Haneda flights rather than not yet removing flights. No date set for a tourism return and I don't think they'll fill an entire plane with business travelers.

UA applies for 6x additional HND slots - UA gets EWR, ORD, IAD, LAX
This amazing HND expansion was scheduled from Spring 2020... and you know the story from here

I'm glad to see that UA still appears to be interested in pressing forward with the HND expansion. I don't think it'll be fully built out until Japan opens to business and tourism on a substantially unrestricted basis, though.

IMO, COVID set the TPAC market a decade or more, which only means transfer hubs like ICN and NRT will gain in importance as traffic recovers. It probably won't be economical to fly 777s and 787s deep into SE Asia and China from multiple US gateways for some time, given reduced business travel, depressed tourism and COVID restriction uncertainty. For that reason, the ability to consolidate traffic at a TPAC gateway, like the old days, will regain value as many long-haul "hub overflights" won't be viable.

So I expect to see UA keep its NRT portfolio, too.

I recently flew SFO-NRT-BKK on UA and NH. The connection is seamless. Most of the pax on the UA flight were transfer pax. (Pax entering Japan got to disembark first, and there were not too many.) Of interest, the NH flight was much fuller in Y than in the past. I would estimate 75% full! A year ago this flight was empty! 😳

Good luck with this - as mentioned, Japan remains closed to tourists and my sources tell me that will persist for the rest of 2022 - they are in no hurry to let foreigners in, and business travelers require a visa to enter Japan. I see no reason to add flights until well into 2023.

There are Upper House elections in July (25th?) and the current public support for keeping tourists out is important to the Kishida government. Hopefully, there will be a gradual opening after that date. So, at best, LAX-HND will operate in August, but this is very optimistic.

Maybe - on the flip side a delegation from the Japan Association of Travel Agents is currently meeting in Hawaii and they've suggested June reinforced with an interview with the Governor on the morning news.

yes-i cant see it opening up quickly either..as a permanent resident withjapanese wife and kids I wasnt even allowed to return to Japan originally if I left when corona first hit!

it is slowly opening with family visa, student visas etc being allowed but still incredibly tight and the population in general have no problem with no foreigners coming..

the daily cap on entrants is slowly increasing was 3500peeps in Feb and now going up to 10,000people end this week....however,with the pcr tests ,manual doc checks at the airport doubt whether they can cope... 3-4hrs to get thru is standard ,some have been taking 9-10hrs to get thru immigration...

I just don't see United, or any other airline for that matter, ramping up any flights to an O/D destination in Japan unless something dramatic changes with public opinion. Ironically with the inbound quarantine lifted for fully vaccinated and boosted travelers, outbound travel by Japanese is picking up and Hawaii is likely to get a big boost soon.
